Price Before Multiple Discounts

Reverse a known final price and sequence of percentage discounts to estimate the original price before the offers.

A final price of 72.00 after 20% and then 10% discounts implies 100.00 before discounts because 100 × 0.8 × 0.9 = 72.

Set up the calculation

Enter your own values or load the worked example. Your entries stay in this browser.

Enter the known final price in the same currency as the unknown original price.

Enter 1 to 12 rates separated by commas, such as 20,10. Each rate must be below 100.

How to use the Price Before Multiple Discounts

Use this when you know the checkout price and listed sequential discounts but need to reconstruct a plausible original price.

  1. What to enter

Enter the final amount and each discount rate in applied order. Keep tax and shipping treatment consistent with the amount you are reversing.

  2. Worked example

    A final price of 72.00 after 20% and then 10% discounts implies 100.00 before discounts because 100 × 0.8 × 0.9 = 72.

  3. How to read the result

The summary is the original amount under the stated no-intermediate-rounding model. The table shows the expected price after each stage.

Method

Multiply the remaining fractions (1 - discount/100), then divide the known final price by that combined fraction. The stage table applies those unrounded fractions from the estimated original.

What to check

A merchant may round at each stage, so several original cent prices can lead to the same final cent price. This is an estimate under unrounded percentage factors.

Avoid this mistake

Dividing by 1 minus the sum of rates is wrong for consecutive offers; multiply their remaining fractions instead.

Questions to check

Can I recover the exact original tag price?

Sometimes. Per-stage cent rounding can make more than one tag price compatible with the same final amount.

Does order matter?

The exact combined factor is order-independent, but a checkout that rounds each stage can differ by a cent.

What if one discount is 100%?

There is no unique original from a zero final price, so this worksheet excludes 100% discounts.
