Consecutive Discount Effective Rate
Apply a sequence of discounts to a starting price, inspect each stage’s savings, and calculate the combined effective discount.
Starting at 100.00, a 20% discount leaves 80.00 and a further 10% leaves 72.00. The combined discount is 28%, not 30%.

How to use the Consecutive Discount Effective Rate
Use this to audit stacked sale rates or compare a combined offer with a single discount. The stage table shows where every cent of savings came from.
What to enter
Enter a positive starting price with two decimal places and the discount percentages in the order applied, separated by commas.
Worked example
Starting at 100.00, a 20% discount leaves 80.00 and a further 10% leaves 72.00. The combined discount is 28%, not 30%.
How to read the result
The summary is the total reduction relative to the original price. Each row reports a rate, cash saving, and remaining price after that stage.
Method
For each rate, multiply the current price by that rate, round the saving to cents, and subtract it before applying the next discount. Effective rate is total savings divided by the original price.
What to check
This models sequential percentage discounts only. Tax, shipping, coupon exclusions, minimum spend, and merchant-specific rounding can change a checkout total.
Avoid this mistake
Adding rates together ignores the smaller base used by every later discount.

Questions to check
Does discount order change the result?
With exact arithmetic, multiplication commutes. With per-stage cent rounding, changing order can sometimes change the final cent.
Can a rate be 100%?
No. This bounded worksheet accepts rates below 100%; a free item needs no price calculation.
Is tax included?
No. Enter and interpret a pre-tax or tax-inclusive starting price consistently.
