How to use the Shift Pattern Date Expander
Use this to turn a compact shift code into a date-by-date planning list. It helps check where a repeating pattern restarts before you add staff names and actual shift hours.
What to enter
Enter the first pattern date, a sequence of 1 to 28 D, N, or O letters, and the number of dates to show. D means day, N night, and O off.
Worked example
Pattern DDNNOOO starting 6 January yields two day shifts, two night shifts, and three off days before repeating.
How to read the result
Each row assigns the next pattern letter to a date. After the last letter, the sequence starts again; the cycle column helps you see which repeat produced the assignment.
How the result is worked out
Walk the entered pattern from left to right, restarting it after the last code. D means day, N means night, and O means off.
What to check
The letters are labels only. This does not calculate shift hours, premiums, fatigue limits, or statutory rest.
A common mistake to avoid
The code alone does not define start or end time, rest period, pay premium, or legal compliance. A night label marks its starting date only.
Shift codes: D = day, N = night, O = off. Rotation codes A and B alternate weekly.
This tool calculates in your browser. The dates you enter are not sent to the Nirmion API.
Questions to check
Does N automatically span two dates?
No. N labels the start date of a night assignment; enter and review actual hours separately.
What happens after the last pattern letter?
The sequence repeats from its first letter until the requested date count is reached.
Can I enter a different shift code?
No. This version accepts only D, N, and O. Other labels need a different roster model.
