How to use the Overnight Shift Duration Calculator
Use this for a shift that starts on one date and ends the next day when you need a straightforward wall-clock duration. The separate break input makes the net estimate explicit.
What to enter
Enter the shift start date and time, the next-day end time, and unpaid break minutes. The end time is always interpreted on the following calendar day.
Worked example
A 22:00–06:00 shift with a 30-minute unpaid break has 7.50 net wall-clock hours.
How to read the result
The result shows the two endpoint times and net hours after subtracting the break. A 22:00 to 06:00 shift spans eight wall-clock hours before any break is removed.
How the result is worked out
Treat the end clock time as the next calendar day. Subtract start from next-day end, then subtract entered unpaid break minutes.
What to check
This is a wall-clock estimate. It does not adjust for daylight-saving changes, time zones, payroll rounding, or paid break rules.
A common mistake to avoid
A clock change can make actual elapsed time differ from wall-clock subtraction. Payroll rounding, paid breaks, and time-zone rules also require another source of truth.
This tool calculates in your browser. The dates you enter are not sent to the Nirmion API.
Questions to check
Does it account for daylight-saving changes?
No. Enter actual elapsed instants in a time-zone-aware payroll system when a clock change occurs.
Can I use this for a same-day shift?
No. This page always places the end time on the next calendar day; use a same-day hours workflow for a shift that ends before midnight.
What if the break is longer than the shift?
The input is rejected rather than producing a negative duration. Check the start, end, and break values.
