Calculation method

How compound conductivity units reduce to W per metre kelvin

Each factor reconciles energy rate, path length, and temperature difference to W/(m K). Kelvin and degree Celsius intervals have equal size, while BTU and calorie entries retain their named IT or thermochemical energy convention before destination conversion.

Is thermal conductivity the same as thermal resistance?

No. Conductivity is a material property, commonly expressed in W/(m K). Thermal resistance also depends on geometry, such as layer thickness and area, and may include interfaces or surface films. Converting conductivity does not produce an R-value or U-value without those additional definitions and conditions.

Why are the BTU and calorie conventions labelled?

Several historical energy-unit definitions exist, and small factor differences can matter in technical work. This converter labels the International Table BTU and thermochemical calorie rather than presenting an ambiguous BTU or calorie. Match the source specification and do not remove the convention when recording or exchanging the converted result.

Can I compare conductivity values from different temperatures?

Only when the material behavior and test basis support that comparison. Conductivity can vary with temperature, moisture, density, direction, composition, and manufacturing state. This page does not adjust any of those factors. Preserve the test conditions and use an appropriate material model or qualified source for interpolation.
