DATA SIZE WORKSPACE

Byte & Data Storage Converter

Compare bits, decimal bytes, and IEC binary bytes without hiding the difference between GB and GiB.

Reviewed reference factorsValues stay in this browser tabNon-negative data quantities; transfer time, formatting overhead, and usable capacity are not estimated.

Conversion input

Convert a data size with the prefix standard visible

Enter a quantity and choose the exact symbol. Decimal kB, MB, GB, and TB use powers of 1,000; KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB use powers of 1,024.

7 / 7

Filter by unit name, symbol, or code. Your current selections remain available.

0 / 80

Enter the data quantity as a number only. Check the source label carefully: GB and GiB are different units, as are bit and byte.

Choose the unit attached to the value you entered.

Choose the unit required for your report, estimate, or comparison.

Choose the maximum decimal places shown. This does not increase source accuracy.

Conversion runs locally after the active reference catalogue loads.

Load the 500 GB example or enter a size to compare bits, decimal bytes, and binary IEC units.

What this tool delivers

Decimal and binary prefixes kept separate

The selector and export preserve exact unit codes so a familiar abbreviation cannot silently change the result.

01

What it converts

Converts bits, bytes, decimal SI-prefixed byte units, and IEC binary-prefixed byte units through bytes.

02

What you provide

One non-negative quantity and the exact source label: bit or byte, plus decimal or binary prefix where applicable.

03

What you receive

A selected data-size result, every available equivalent, the byte factor path, and a formula-safe CSV.

Calculation method

How decimal and binary storage units differ

Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000, while IEC binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. Eight bits equal one byte. The calculation first converts the source to bytes, then to the selected destination.

Quick answers

Byte & Data Storage Converter questions

Why is 1 GB less than 1 GiB?

One GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes; one GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Are bit and byte interchangeable?

No. Eight bits equal one byte, and network rates are often labelled in bits per second.

Will this predict free disk space?

No. Filesystems, recovery partitions, redundancy, and formatting can reduce usable capacity.
