STEM PRACTICE AND EVIDENCE WORKBENCH

Scientific Explanation Quality Analyzer

Group rubric evidence by explanation and audit criterion coverage, essential elements, and consistent ready or review claims.

Runs in this browser tabEditable downloadUp to 500 structured rows and 30,000 characters per field. Use anonymous or fictional labels.

Learning inputs

Build the scientific explanation quality analyzer

Enter a fictional analysis name, coverage threshold, and explanation | criterion | present yes or no | essential yes or no | ready or review. Repeat an explanation for each rubric criterion. Use observable criteria such as claim, relevant evidence, reasoning, mechanism, uncertainty, alternative explanation, or limitation, and apply the same documented rubric consistently.

Generation uses only the information entered in this tab. It does not fetch sources or make student decisions.

Transparent method

How the scientific explanation quality analyzer works

Group rows by normalized explanation. Coverage percentage equals criteria marked present divided by all entered criteria times 100. Ready requires coverage at or above the declared threshold, at least one criterion marked essential, and every essential criterion marked present. Every row carrying the explanation must use the same ready or review claim that follows those conditions. Supported means the entered rubric marks and claim are internally consistent. It does not validate scientific content, coherence, evidence quality, or authorship. A missing optional element may still matter for a particular audience, while complete boxes can accompany weak reasoning. Return to the explanation, source data, rubric definitions, counterevidence, uncertainty, accessibility, and disciplinary expectations.

  1. 01
    Before generation

Confirm the learning question, authoritative source, units, notation, response coding, model assumptions, and review threshold. Keep an unchanged copy of the original evidence and remove learner names or identifiers.

  2. 02
    During review

Run the worked example first, inspect every intermediate row, and compare it with a hand calculation, diagram, representation, or approved subject method. Correct input evidence before interpreting a flag.

  3. 03
    Before use

Record the method, assumptions, units, classifications, and flagged rows. Verify the editable report independently, connect the numerical signal with learner reasoning, and document any teaching or laboratory decision outside this tool.

How to interpret the result

Scientific Explanation Quality Analyzer

Before generation

Use during formative review, moderation, self-assessment, or rubric design when reviewers need to see exactly which explanation elements are present. The analyzer combines an overall coverage threshold with a safeguard for essential criteria. It does not read or fact-check prose, decide whether evidence is relevant, infer causal reasoning, award a grade, detect plagiarism, or establish scientific validity.

Worked example

Plant growth contains claim, evidence, and reasoning, with uncertainty absent but optional. Coverage is 75 percent and every essential criterion is present, so ready is supported. Force model lacks essential reasoning and correctly says review. Review claim has the same ready evidence pattern as the first explanation but is labeled review, so its repeated claim conflicts with the disclosed rule.

Formula or methodology

Group rows by normalized explanation. Coverage percentage equals criteria marked present divided by all entered criteria times 100. Ready requires coverage at or above the declared threshold, at least one criterion marked essential, and every essential criterion marked present. Every row carrying the explanation must use the same ready or review claim that follows those conditions.

How to interpret the result

Supported means the entered rubric marks and claim are internally consistent. It does not validate scientific content, coherence, evidence quality, or authorship. A missing optional element may still matter for a particular audience, while complete boxes can accompany weak reasoning. Return to the explanation, source data, rubric definitions, counterevidence, uncertainty, accessibility, and disciplinary expectations.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse mentioning data with using relevant evidence, treat a conclusion as causal reasoning, make every criterion essential, lower a threshold to approve a response, enter inconsistent claims for one explanation, or convert the percentage directly into a grade. Calibrate reviewers with examples, preserve comments, check factual accuracy, and give an actionable revision path.

CAST UDL: assessment and feedback evidence

Learning boundary

A calculated signal still requires subject review

This browser-local workbench applies only the disclosed rules. It cannot diagnose a learner, certify an experiment, establish assessment validity, or replace teacher, laboratory, curriculum, accessibility, and safety judgment.

Review checklist

Human review before educational use

  • Every entered value, unit, label, and response matches the approved source evidence.
  • The disclosed model matches the intended curriculum question and evidence type.
  • Intermediate calculations, restrictions, and conflicts have been inspected rather than using only the headline.
  • A teacher or learner verifies the report independently and records corrections, limitations, and next steps.

Practical questions

Scientific Explanation Quality Analyzer questions

Does Nirmion upload these inputs?

No. Processing occurs in the current browser tab. Avoid personal information and retain authoritative records only in the approved school system.

Can the result prove mastery or scientific validity?

No. It describes entered evidence under one disclosed rule. Review reasoning, uncertainty, access, and several evidence sources.

Can I submit the downloaded report as finished work?

Treat it as an editable calculation aid. Show your own reasoning, cite required sources, and follow course and academic-integrity rules.
