How to use Debt Consolidation Quote Normalizer

Use this workflow when several existing debts and one or more consolidation offers need a consistent comparison. It first models each existing balance under its entered monthly payment, then normalizes quote proceeds, financed fees, upfront fees, APR, and term. The coverage check prevents a partial offer from appearing to replace every debt.

  1. Prepare the input

For each existing debt, enter balance, nominal APR, and the payment you expect to continue each month. Payments must exceed modeled interest enough to amortize within 600 months. For each quote, enter proceeds available for payoff as principal, APR, term, cash upfront fee, and fee added to the new balance. Keep settlement proposals and balance transfers out unless their contracts fit this model.

  2. Check the worked example

The example combines a personal loan and credit card totaling USD 8,000. One quote covers exactly that principal and finances a fee. Another offers only USD 7,500 and is visibly incomplete. A shorter third quote provides extra proceeds but can require a higher monthly payment. The baseline table retains the original payoff evidence.

  3. Read the evidence

Begin with coverage surplus or gap. A negative value means the quote does not provide enough proceeds to clear entered balances and its total cost is marked not comparable. For fully covering quotes, compare payment change, interest, total cost difference, and term change. A lower consolidated payment can be paired with more months or a higher total cost.

Calculation method

Existing debts accrue monthly nominal APR interest and apply the entered payment until zero. Quote payments use a fixed amortizing schedule on principal plus financed fees. Total quote cost = scheduled quote payments + upfront fees. Cost difference is calculated only when quote principal covers all entered balances. Coverage does not assume excess proceeds are returned.

Questions this workflow helps answer

Use these questions to confirm that this tool matches the task you need to complete.

  • How can I compare debt consolidation quotes with my existing payoff costs?
  • Does a consolidation loan cover every existing balance after financed and upfront fees?
  • Can a lower consolidation payment still increase total interest or payoff time?

Limits and decision boundary

Consolidation can change creditor protections, collateral risk, tax treatment, access to revolving credit, and behavior. The model excludes settlement discounts, transfer promotions, prepayment penalties on existing debts, variable rates, closing timing, and new borrowing. It does not verify lender legitimacy or recommend accepting an offer.

Common mistake

Do not treat the quoted loan amount as usable payoff proceeds when the lender withholds an origination fee. Enter withheld cash impact in the structure that matches the disclosure and confirm coverage independently.

Questions about this workflow

Why is a partial quote not comparable?

The uncovered balances would continue to require payments and interest. Comparing only the new loan would omit part of the existing debt path.

Can a quote lower payment and cost more?

Yes. Extending the term can reduce the monthly amount while increasing modeled interest or total fees.

Does consolidation close my credit cards?

The tool makes no assumption about account closure or future use. Confirm lender payoff and account status with each creditor.
