How to use the Budget Category Overspend Sequence

Use this while reviewing a category to see exactly which purchase crossed its planned limit, rather than only seeing the final overage.

  1. What to enter

Add the category cap and one description, amount transaction per line in chronological order. Keep each entry in the same currency and period.

  2. Worked example

A 100.00 cap with 45.00 groceries, 10.00 coffee, and 50.00 dinner ends 5.00 over at the third entry.

  3. How to read the result

Scan the remaining column for its first negative value. That row is the first entered transaction that puts this category over its cap.

Method

Begin with the entered cap and subtract each transaction amount in the order supplied, recording the signed remaining balance after each row.

What to check

Order is supplied by you. The worksheet does not validate transaction dates, merge refunds, detect duplicates, or import account activity.

Avoid this mistake

Entering purchases out of order changes the apparent first overspend even though the final balance stays the same.

Calculations run locally in your browser. No entered values are sent to the Nirmion API.

Questions to check

Can I include refunds?

This version accepts nonnegative spending only; adjust the source totals before entering them.

Can names repeat?

Yes. Separate transactions can have the same description.

Is the cap enforced?

No. The tool reports balances and never blocks a purchase.
