Replace literal text without regex surprises

Find and Replace

Replace every literal occurrence with optional case sensitivity, safely escape punctuation, report the replacement count, and keep the source in your browser.

01 / Input

Add source text and the exact value to find

Search is literal, not a regular expression. Characters such as periods, brackets, stars, and question marks match themselves, reducing accidental broad replacements.

Complete the required fields to enable this action.

Product guide

Replace exact repeated text with a safer default

Nirmion escapes regular-expression syntax and replaces literal matches only. That makes simple editorial changes more predictable while still allowing case-sensitive or case-insensitive matching.
Step A

Prepare the input

Paste the complete source, then enter a non-empty search value and replacement. The replacement can be empty when deletion is intentional. Search and replacement values are each capped at 10,000 characters.

Step B

Choose the rule

Case-sensitive mode matches exact letter case. Case-insensitive mode matches case variants and writes the same replacement text for all of them. Every non-overlapping occurrence is replaced; there is no first-only option.

Step C

Review the output

Check the replacement count and inspect words where the search value might appear as a substring. Replacing cat also changes concatenate. Use a word-aware editor when boundaries, inflection, or syntax matter.

How it works

Escaped literal global matching

The search value is escaped before a global Unicode regular expression is created. Optional case-insensitive matching adds the i flag. A function replacement inserts the text literally, so dollar-sign replacement patterns are not interpreted. Empty search is rejected, and an output cap prevents a short repeated search with a huge replacement from expanding memory without bound.

Useful when

Apply one consistent textual substitution

Literal replacement is effective when the target sequence is unambiguous and every occurrence should change.

  1. Update a repeated product label, placeholder, date, status, terminology choice, or spelling variant in a draft.
  2. Remove a known marker by leaving replacement empty after confirming the exact occurrence count.
  3. Safely replace text containing regex punctuation without learning or debugging a regular expression.

Questions answered

Find and Replace questions

Practical boundaries matter with text tools. These answers explain what is measured, what is retained, and when a manual review is still needed.

Can I use a regular expression?

No. Search is deliberately literal for this tool. Periods, brackets, stars, and other regex punctuation match themselves. Use a reviewed regex tool when patterns are required.

Can replacement be empty?

Yes. That removes every match. The search value itself cannot be empty because an empty global match would be ambiguous and potentially explosive.

Does case-insensitive mode preserve each match case?

No. Every case variant is replaced by the exact replacement you enter. Review capitalization in sentence starts, headings, and names afterward.

Privacy and retention

Your draft stays on your device.

Nirmion performs these operations with browser JavaScript. The workspace does not call the catalogue API with your source text, and completed-job content is kept only in this component memory for re-download.

A downloaded file remains in your browser downloads, device storage, backups, and any location where you share it. Clear or close the page when working on a shared device, and avoid pasting secrets into extensions or third-party clipboard managers.

Tool details

Literal find and replace with visible safeguards

Nirmion Find and Replace substitutes every non-overlapping literal occurrence in text up to 500,000 characters. Users can choose case-sensitive or case-insensitive matching, remove text with an empty replacement, and see replacement and character metrics before copying or downloading the result.

Output downloads as text_nirmion_tools_replaced.txt and all processing remains in the browser. Search punctuation is escaped and replacement dollar signs are inserted literally, while product guidance explains substring, code, and word-boundary risks.
