Calculation method

How decimal prefixes scale the ohm

The source value is multiplied by its decimal ohm prefix factor and divided by the destination factor. Micro, milli, kilo, mega, and giga mean powers of ten; symbol case remains visible to distinguish milliohm from megaohm.

Why does symbol capitalization matter for resistance?

SI prefixes are case-sensitive. Lowercase m denotes milli, or 10^-3, while uppercase M denotes mega, or 10^6. Confusing milliohms and megaohms creates a billion-fold error. This page spells out full unit names alongside symbols, but you should preserve exact capitalization when entering data into another system.

Can this convert impedance to resistance?

No. Impedance can include frequency-dependent reactance as well as resistance and may require a complex magnitude and phase. A numeric value labelled ohms is not enough to identify which quantity it represents. Use an impedance workflow with frequency and circuit context rather than stripping the label and converting prefixes here.

Does converting resistance check a component power rating?

No. Power dissipation depends on circuit voltage or current and operating conditions, while component suitability also involves tolerance, temperature coefficient, pulse behavior, voltage rating, environment, and derating. This converter only changes the resistance unit. Verify the complete electrical and thermal design against the component datasheet.
