EXCESS OVER IDEAL / FACTOR APPLIED
See exactly which kilograms are carried forward
Adjusted body weight is not the midpoint between actual and ideal weight. It starts with the entered ideal-weight basis, isolates only the weight above that value, and adds back the selected fraction of that excess. With the reviewed defaults, १०० kg minus ७० kg leaves ३० kg. Applying ४०% keeps १२ kg, so the calculator returns ८२ kg.
Worked default example
- Entered weights and factor
- Actual weight = १०० kg. Entered ideal-weight basis = ७० kg. Correction factor = 0.4.
- Find the weight above ideal
- १०० kg - ७० kg = ३० kg.
- Translate the factor
- 0.4 means ४०% of the excess term is carried into the adjusted estimate.
- Calculate the corrected excess
- 0.4 x ३० kg = १२ kg.
- Return adjusted body weight
- ७० kg + 0.4 x ३० kg = ८२ kg.
- See what stays out
- १०० kg - ८२ kg = १८ kg. The omitted share is not carried into the adjusted value.
What to enter and how to read the result
Enter a recent measured actual body weight, the ideal-weight value required by the protocol you are following, and the correction factor as a fraction between 0 and 1. The main result is adjusted body weight. The supporting metrics recap the weight above the entered ideal value, the factor used, and the actual body weight so you can audit the arithmetic.
What the calculator actually does
Nirmion evaluates adjusted weight = ideal weight + correction factor x (actual weight - ideal weight). In the reviewed default example, ७० kg + 0.4 x ३० kg = ८२ kg. The corrected excess carried into the result is १२ kg, while १८ kg stays outside the adjusted estimate.
Assumptions behind this page
The tool assumes your entered ideal-weight value is already the correct basis for the protocol you are checking, that actual weight is at least as large as the entered ideal value, and that the correction factor belongs to the same protocol context. It does not derive ideal body weight for you and it does not infer a drug-specific factor from a medication name.
Where this model stops helping
This calculator does not decide whether adjusted body weight, actual body weight, ideal body weight, lean body mass, or body surface area is the right basis for a specific decision. It should not be used as a diagnosis, nutrition target, or independent medication instruction. When actual weight is below the entered ideal value, the page stops and asks for revised inputs instead of extrapolating.
Reference and next checks
The linked Australian Prescriber review presents the same adjusted-body-weight structure as correction factor x (total body weight - ideal body weight) + ideal body weight and notes that a 0.4 factor is mainly discussed for aminoglycosides rather than as a universal rule. That is why this calculator asks you to enter both the ideal-weight basis and the factor explicitly.
Only १२ kg of the ३० kg excess is carried forward. The remaining १८ kg stays outside the adjusted estimate.
Adjusted body weight as ideal base plus selected excess
A horizontal bar for the reviewed default example showing an ideal base of ७० kg, a carried-forward corrected excess of १२ kg, omitted excess of १८ kg, and the adjusted result ८२ kg inside the full actual weight १०० kg.
The calculation starts from this entered ideal-weight value.
Only the gap above the entered ideal value becomes eligible for correction.
The selected factor keeps only ४०% of the excess term.
Ideal weight plus corrected excess gives the adjusted estimate.
How the reviewed default is split
७० kg + 0.4 x ३० kg = ८२ kg.
0.4 x ३० kg = १२ kg and १०० kg - ८२ kg = १८ kg.

Why the factor stays user-entered
The cited review treats adjusted body weight as a correction-factor convention rather than a universal rule and says the common 0.4 factor is mainly used for aminoglycosides. Nirmion therefore shows the arithmetic clearly but leaves the protocol choice outside the calculator.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Adjusted body weight calculator FAQs
Why does the result not sit halfway between actual and ideal weight?
Because the formula does not average the two weights. It starts from ७० kg and adds only ४०% of the ३० kg excess, which is १२ kg in the reviewed default example.
Should I enter 40 or 0.4 for a forty percent factor?
Enter 0.4. This field expects a fraction from 0 to 1, not a percent from 0 to 100.
What happens if actual weight is below the entered ideal value?
The calculator stops and asks for revised inputs. A lower actual weight would make the excess term negative, and this tool does not assume that a reverse correction is meaningful.
