EDUCATION DECISION WORKBENCH

Motion Graph Segment Analyzer

Turn time-position observations into interval velocities, direction, rest, reversals, distance, displacement, and an auditable motion story.

Runs in this browser tabEditable downloadUp to 500 structured rows and 30,000 characters per field. Use anonymous or fictional labels.

Learning inputs

Build the motion graph segment analyzer

Enter one shared time unit, one shared position unit, and time | position rows from a graph or investigation. Times must be distinct. Negative positions are allowed, and the workbench sorts observations chronologically before calculating interval slopes.

Generation uses only the information entered in this tab. It does not fetch sources or make student decisions.

Transparent method

How the motion graph segment analyzer works

For each adjacent pair, interval velocity equals (later position − earlier position) divided by (later time − earlier time). Total distance sums absolute position changes. Displacement equals final position minus initial position. Overall average velocity equals displacement divided by total elapsed time. A reversal occurs when consecutive nonzero velocity signs differ; a zero slope marks rest over that sampled interval. Positive and negative slopes describe direction relative to the chosen coordinate axis, not speed quality or correctness. Distance can exceed the magnitude of displacement when motion reverses. A horizontal segment means unchanged recorded position, while a steep segment means a larger average speed. Curved motion needs more samples or a derivative method to discuss instantaneous velocity.

  1. 01
    Before generation

Confirm the question, variables, units, source data, measurement precision, and the model expected by the current course or laboratory. Keep an untouched copy of observations before excluding or transforming any value.

  2. 02
    During review

Run the worked example first, inspect every intermediate row, compare units and signs, and look for a result that conflicts with the graph, physical system, chemical equation, or learning objective.

  3. 03
    Before use

Record the method, assumptions, units, rounding, data limitations, and any excluded observations. Compare the exported report with an independent calculation or approved reference before assessment or laboratory use.

How to interpret the result

Motion Graph Segment Analyzer

Before generation

Use this analyzer when learners must read a position-time graph or connect measured motion data with slope, direction, rest, distance, and displacement. The interval table is useful for checking a hand-drawn graph, explaining a multi-stage journey, or identifying where an object reverses direction. It does not estimate velocity between samples beyond the straight-segment average.

Worked example

The fictional trolley moves from 0 m to 8 m during the first four seconds, remains at 8 m for two seconds, and returns to 2 m by ten seconds. The report identifies positive motion, a rest interval, negative motion, one reversal, 14 m of total distance, 2 m of displacement, and the resulting average velocity over the complete elapsed time.

Formula or methodology

For each adjacent pair, interval velocity equals (later position − earlier position) divided by (later time − earlier time). Total distance sums absolute position changes. Displacement equals final position minus initial position. Overall average velocity equals displacement divided by total elapsed time. A reversal occurs when consecutive nonzero velocity signs differ; a zero slope marks rest over that sampled interval.

How to interpret the result

Positive and negative slopes describe direction relative to the chosen coordinate axis, not speed quality or correctness. Distance can exceed the magnitude of displacement when motion reverses. A horizontal segment means unchanged recorded position, while a steep segment means a larger average speed. Curved motion needs more samples or a derivative method to discuss instantaneous velocity.

Common mistakes

Do not calculate speed from graph height, confuse a negative position with negative velocity, add signed displacements when total distance is requested, use unequal axis scales visually without calculation, or describe interval averages as exact instantaneous values. Confirm the reference origin, time ordering, units, sensor sampling, and whether gaps hide changes in motion.

A transparent model still needs scientific review

This browser-local workbench calculates only from the entered model and observations. It cannot validate an experiment, balance an equation, establish causation, certify laboratory safety, diagnose learning, or replace the method required by a teacher, curriculum, laboratory, or institution.

Review checklist

Human review before educational use

  • Every value has the correct unit, sign, precision, and source.
  • The selected equation or statistical model matches the question.
  • Intermediate rows, assumptions, residuals, and warnings have been inspected.
  • A qualified teacher or learner verifies the report against the approved method.

Practical questions

Motion Graph Segment Analyzer questions

Does Nirmion upload these observations?

No. The calculation runs in the current browser tab. Avoid personal information and retain laboratory data in the system authorized by the school.

Can I submit the generated report as final work?

Treat it as an editable analysis aid. Show your own reasoning, cite the required sources, follow academic-integrity rules, and use the method requested by your course.

Does a plausible number prove the model is correct?

No. Check dimensions, graph shape, assumptions, measurement uncertainty, significant figures, and whether another model explains the observations better.
