EDUCATION DECISION WORKBENCH

Summative Assessment Planner

Allocate marks and time across weighted objectives while keeping cognitive demand and moderation visible.

Runs in this browser tabEditable downloadUp to 500 structured rows and 30,000 characters per field. Use anonymous or fictional labels.

Learning inputs

Build the summative assessment planner

Enter the assessment title, exact mark and minute totals, a protected final-review reserve, then objective | weight percent | cognitive demand rows that total 100%. Add non-negotiable format, accessibility, security, or moderation constraints.

Generation uses only the information entered in this tab. It does not fetch sources or make student decisions.

Transparent method

How the summative assessment planner works

Working minutes equal total minutes minus the review reserve. Marks and working minutes are allocated by objective weight. Floor values are calculated first; leftover units go to the largest fractional remainders, with stable source order breaking ties. The allocation is a coverage target. It does not establish item quality, validity, reliability, accessibility, or security. Review actual items and scoring evidence against the plan.

  1. 01
    Before generation

Confirm objectives, evidence, mark total, duration, and policy.

  2. 02
    During review

Write and tag items against the blueprint.

  3. 03
    Before use

Moderate scoring, accessibility, coverage, and difficulty before administration.

How to interpret the result

Summative Assessment Planner

Before generation

Use this before writing items to prevent accidental overemphasis on easy-to-test content. The blueprint gives reviewers a shared allocation before item wording and scoring decisions begin.

Worked example

A 60-mark, 75-minute biology assessment protects five minutes for final review, then weights cell transport at 30%, data interpretation at 35%, and investigation design at 35%. The tool preserves the 60-mark and 70-working-minute totals despite rounding.

Formula or methodology

Working minutes equal total minutes minus the review reserve. Marks and working minutes are allocated by objective weight. Floor values are calculated first; leftover units go to the largest fractional remainders, with stable source order breaking ties.

How to interpret the result

The allocation is a coverage target. It does not establish item quality, validity, reliability, accessibility, or security. Review actual items and scoring evidence against the plan.

Common mistakes

Avoid weights that do not total 100, allocating marks before clarifying objectives, treating cognitive labels as automatic, or adding access barriers unrelated to the construct.

Learning boundary

A blueprint is not assessment validation

Qualified educators must review item content, scoring, bias, accessibility, security, and use of results.

Review checklist

Human review before educational use

  • Objective weights total 100%.
  • Marks and minutes match official totals.
  • Every constraint is addressed.
  • Independent moderation checks the completed assessment.

Practical questions

Summative Assessment Planner questions

Why use largest-remainder allocation?

It keeps integer marks and minutes while staying close to entered weights.

Does the plan generate exam questions?

No. It structures coverage so reviewed questions can be written deliberately.

Can one item cover several objectives?

Yes, but document how marks are attributed and avoid double counting.
