BUILT AROUND THE TASK

Debug an API payload

Make a difficult payload readable, find syntax mistakes, and compare what changed between requests. Convert JSON to another representation only when the receiving system actually requires it.

USE WITH CONTEXT

Before you use these tools

Use synthetic examples or remove credentials and personal information before inspecting a payload. Valid JSON proves syntax, not that a request meets an API's business rules or schema.

A PRACTICAL ROUTE THROUGH THE SHELF

From raw input to reviewed output

  1. 1

    Make the payload readable

Format a representative example and inspect the nesting. Preserve the raw input so you can compare changes.

  2. 2

    Locate the mismatch

Validate JSON syntax and compare a working payload with the failing one. Check null values, number types, arrays, and property names.

  3. 3

    Test the receiving API

Send the corrected sample in a test environment and inspect the response. Confirm the endpoint's schema and error behavior separately.

Questions before you start

Why does valid JSON still fail an API request?

The endpoint may require particular properties, types, credentials, or business rules. A JSON validator checks document syntax; use the API contract and its response details to understand why the server rejected the request.
