Turn a word count into a useful time estimate
Reading time is a ratio, not a stopwatch prediction. Nirmion divides the Unicode-aware word count by your chosen pace, then provides minutes and rounded seconds without pretending every reader moves at the same speed.Choose the rule
Choose a words-per-minute rate from 100 to 1,000. Lower values fit dense, technical, second-language, or spoken material; higher values can model scanning or familiar lightweight prose.
Review the output
Use the estimate in an article label, content plan, lesson agenda, narration draft, or review budget. Round conservatively and test representative material when duration affects accessibility or a fixed program schedule.
How it works
Words divided by an explicit reading pace
The calculation is words / words per minute, with seconds derived from the same unrounded ratio. Words use the browser Unicode segmenter where available. Nirmion does not infer complexity, font size, audience fluency, diagrams, pronunciation, pauses, or time spent following links, so the selected pace remains the key planning assumption.

What words-per-minute value should I use?
Two hundred is a common planning baseline for general silent prose, not a universal truth. Try 130 to 170 for spoken or dense material and higher values only when modelling scanning. Audience testing is better than a generic assumption.
Does the estimate include images and videos?
No. It measures pasted words. Add separate time for diagrams, data tables, code, forms, interactions, media, reflection, and navigation.
Why show both minutes and seconds?
Decimal minutes help planning and comparison, while rounded seconds are convenient for short scripts. Both come from the same word count and selected pace.

Nirmion performs these operations with browser JavaScript. The workspace does not call the catalogue API with your source text, and completed-job content is kept only in this component memory for re-download.
A downloaded file remains in your browser downloads, device storage, backups, and any location where you share it. Clear or close the page when working on a shared device, and avoid pasting secrets into extensions or third-party clipboard managers.

The draft stays in the browser and the report downloads as text_nirmion_tools_reading_time.txt. The page deliberately treats reading time as planning information, not a promise about every reader or an accessibility determination.
