AIR CONDITIONER COST EXPLAINER
Turn scheduled cooling into billable compressor-hours
This calculator is most useful when an air conditioner does not draw the same power for every scheduled hour. With the reviewed defaults of ۱٫۵ kW, ۸ hours/day, ۳۰ days, ۶۵%, and ₹۸/kWh, the tool compresses the full schedule into ۱۵۶ hours of modeled active runtime, multiplies that runtime by ۱٫۵ kW to reach ۲۳۴ kWh, and then applies the tariff to reach ₹۱٬۸۷۲.
Worked default example
- Entered defaults
- Input power = ۱٫۵ kW. Schedule = ۸ hours/day for ۳۰ days. Duty cycle = ۶۵%. Tariff = ₹۸/kWh.
- Build the full scheduled window
- The page first expands the daily schedule across the full period: ۸ hours/day x ۳۰ days = ۲۴۰ hours.
- Reduce the schedule by duty cycle
- Only the active-power share is billed at the entered kW in this model, so ۲۴۰ hours x ۶۵% = ۱۵۶ hours.
- Convert active hours into billed energy
- Once active runtime is known, the energy step is direct: ۱٫۵ kW x ۱۵۶ hours = ۲۳۴ kWh.
- Apply the tariff to the energy total
- The primary result comes from one tariff applied to one energy total: ۲۳۴ kWh x ₹۸/kWh = ₹۱٬۸۷۲.
- Check the daily average
- The supporting metric for daily cost is calculated separately as ₹۱٬۸۷۲ / ۳۰ days = ₹۶۲٫۴.
What to enter and how to interpret the result
Enter the AC's electrical input power in kilowatts at the operating state you want to model, the scheduled cooling hours per day, the number of days in the period, the average duty cycle, and the electricity tariff. The main result is the estimated period cost. The supporting metrics show total kWh, equivalent active hours, and average daily cost so you can tell whether the estimate is being driven by power draw, long schedules, or a high duty cycle.
What the calculator actually does
The code uses one simple chain: scheduled hours = hours per day x days, active hours = scheduled hours x duty cycle, energy = input kW x active hours, and cost = energy x tariff. In the reviewed default example that becomes ۸ hours/day x ۳۰ days = ۲۴۰ hours, then ۲۴۰ hours x ۶۵% = ۱۵۶ hours, then ۱٫۵ kW x ۱۵۶ hours = ۲۳۴ kWh, and finally ۲۳۴ kWh x ₹۸/kWh = ₹۱٬۸۷۲. The daily average is checked separately as ₹۱٬۸۷۲ / ۳۰ days = ₹۶۲٫۴.
Assumptions inside the duty-cycle model
The entered kW is treated as the modeled active-power draw. The duty cycle is treated as an average fraction of the scheduled window that draws that power. The remaining scheduled time is not billed at that same kW in this simplified model.
Where this estimate stops helping
This page does not infer thermostat logic, fan-only draw, inverter ramping, SEER or EER, humidity control, occupancy, open windows, service condition, multi-stage compressors, demand charges, time-of-use pricing, or fixed taxes and utility fees. If your tariff changes by slab, hour, or season, run separate scenarios instead of trusting one blended number.
The key move is from ۲۴۰ hours of scheduled cooling to ۱۵۶ hours of modeled active runtime at ۶۵% duty cycle.

ENERGY UNIT REFERENCE
Source behind the energy unit
The linked EIA reference explains the unit conversion this calculator depends on: power in kilowatts turns into energy in kilowatthours when it is sustained over time. Nirmion adds the entered duty cycle on top of that standard relation before applying the tariff.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Air conditioner running cost calculator FAQs
These answers focus on the duty-cycle assumption because that is the part most likely to be misread on this tool.
Should I enter tonnage or electrical input power?
Enter electrical input power, not cooling tonnage. The formula bills kWh from the entered kW over the modeled active runtime, so a 1.5 ton or 18,000 BTU per hour cooling rating is not the same thing as the electrical draw used by this page.
What does duty cycle mean on this calculator?
It is the average share of the scheduled window that draws the entered active power. In the default example, ۸ hours/day for ۳۰ days creates ۲۴۰ hours of scheduled cooling, and ۶۵% reduces that to ۱۵۶ hours of modeled active runtime.
How do I handle time-of-use or slab tariffs?
Run separate scenarios. This calculator multiplies one energy total by one tariff, so it does not split usage across peak and off-peak windows, seasonal rates, tiered slabs, taxes, or fixed service fees.
Use boundary
Calculation path
Scheduled hours are reduced by duty cycle, multiplied by active input kW, then valued at the entered tariff.
Energy = input kW x scheduled hours x days x duty cycle; cost = energy x tariff.
