Transparent method
How the scientific notation misconception diagnostic works
For any nonzero value, choose integer n so the coefficient a equals value divided by ten to the n and one is at most the magnitude of a but less than ten. Moving the decimal left produces a positive exponent and moving it right produces a negative exponent. Multiplying a by ten to n must reconstruct the original value. Supported means the coefficient is canonical, the exponent is correct, the sign is preserved, and the product reproduces the entered value. A value-preserving noncanonical form may be mathematically equivalent but still needs normalization. Inspect coefficient and exponent errors separately because each points to a different reasoning step.
01
Before generation
Confirm the question, approved source, units, notation, signs, response coding, model assumptions, and review threshold. Keep an unchanged copy of measurements or learner evidence.
02
During review
Run the worked example, inspect every intermediate row, and compare the result with a hand calculation, diagram, representation, periodic table, or approved laboratory method.
03
Before use
Record the method, assumptions, uncertainty, units, classifications, and flagged rows. Verify the editable report independently before instruction, assessment, or laboratory use.
How to interpret the result
Scientific Notation Misconception Diagnostic
Before generation
Use when learners move decimal points in the wrong direction, change the sign, or write an equivalent expression with a noncanonical coefficient. The diagnostic checks normalization and value preservation separately. It does not decide significant figures, propagate uncertainty, convert units, compare measurement quality, parse symbolic expressions, or explain physical scale by itself.
Worked example
Four hundred fifty thousand becomes 4.5 times ten to the fifth, 0.00072 becomes 7.2 times ten to the negative fourth, and negative 9830 becomes negative 9.83 times ten cubed. The last small value 0.0061 needs exponent negative three, so the entered positive-three exponent changes the magnitude by a million-fold factor.
Formula or methodology

Moving the decimal left produces a positive exponent and moving it right produces a negative exponent. Multiplying a by ten to n must reconstruct the original value.
How to interpret the result

A value-preserving noncanonical form may be mathematically equivalent but still needs normalization. Inspect coefficient and exponent errors separately because each points to a different reasoning step.
Common mistakes
Do not count decimal places without recording direction, use a coefficient of ten or more, make every exponent positive, move the negative sign into the exponent, drop zeros that communicate measured precision, or confuse scientific notation with unit conversion. Estimate the order first, normalize, multiply back, and attach the unchanged unit.
