E-commerce Content & Catalog Quality · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Write Evidence-Backed E-commerce Product Descriptions
A product description should help a buyer understand what is actually being sold. This workflow ties every objective claim to evidence, checks the overall impression and variant data, and routes regulated or higher-risk claims for appropriate review. The linked builder can organize approved facts into draft copy; it cannot verify evidence or make a claim compliant.
MISSION Create a clear online product description from verified specifications, substantiated claims, accurate variant data, and a documented human review.
Check each product claim against current evidence before publishingTHE REAL-WORLD BIT
What happens outside this browser tab?
Identify the exact product and buyer questions; document evidence for each objective claim; order information clearly; draft from approved facts; review express and implied claims; verify variants and shopping data; record human approvals; and maintain the copy when the product or evidence changes.

One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Identify the exact product, variant, and customer use
Start from the item that will actually be sold: brand and model, variant, included components, intended use, materials, size, compatibility, care, limitations, and fulfillment constraints. Confirm whether multiple variants differ in a way a buyer must understand, and which information belongs in structured fields rather than prose. Name the target customer and the purchase decision the description should support, but do not invent a persona or benefit. Keep manufacturer documentation, approved internal specifications, and the live product record together so the writer can verify every detail. If the product is regulated or makes health, safety, environmental, financial, or performance claims, flag that before drafting for the appropriate specialist review.
- 02
Build a source record for every objective product claim
Create a claim list before writing. For each measurable or comparative statement, record the exact wording, the evidence source, the product variant it covers, any conditions, and an owner who can confirm it. Use current specifications, test results, certification records, packaging, and authorized manufacturer material; a competitor listing or a customer quote is not proof that your product has the same attribute. Distinguish verified facts from positioning, assumptions, and opinions. Under FTC truth-in-advertising principles, objective express and implied claims need support before publication; health-related product claims have a specialized scientific substantiation standard. Remove claims whose evidence is missing, outdated, or about a different formulation or version.
- 03
Choose the information order around buyer questions
Arrange the content so a shopper can quickly understand what the product is, who it is for, the principal verified features, compatibility or fit, what is included, and any important limits or care instructions. Put decision-critical facts where they are easy to notice rather than burying them in an unrelated paragraph. Use concrete measurements and named materials when documented, and avoid vague superlatives such as best, guaranteed, or proven unless the exact claim can be substantiated and is appropriate for the product. Shopify's product details guidance identifies title, description, media, price, inventory, and variants as distinct product-page elements; ensure the prose complements rather than contradicts those fields.
- 04
Draft plain-language copy from approved inputs
Write a concise opening that names the item and its most relevant verified use, followed by scannable details, compatibility, included parts, care, and material limitations. Preserve units, model names, and qualifiers from the source record. Do not turn a feature into a guaranteed outcome, imply a certification from a logo alone, or suggest endorsement by a third party without authorization. The Product Description Builder can help assemble a first draft from approved non-sensitive product facts. Treat every generated sentence as unverified: the tool cannot inspect evidence, know the current product formulation, confirm regulatory classification, or determine whether a benefit claim is substantiated.
- 05
Check the overall impression and remove unsupported implications
Read the headline, first paragraph, images, badges, testimonials, and fine print together as a buyer would. Look for implied claims about safety, suitability, compatibility, durability, results, environmental impact, origin, or certification that go beyond the documented facts. A qualification does not fix a headline or image that still conveys an unsupported promise. If a claim is not supported for the exact item and expected use, delete it or rewrite it as a factual description that the evidence establishes. For health-related products, FTC guidance calls for claim-specific review of the evidence and the net impression; testimonials and disclaimers are not substitutes for substantiation.
- 06
Verify variants, availability, and linked shopping data
Compare the final prose against each variant's price, inventory, dimensions, images, identifiers, compatibility fields, shipping details, and return terms. Make sure a claim applies to the variant a customer selects and that unavailable accessories are not presented as included. If the listing is submitted to Google Merchant Center, check the current misrepresentation and product-data rules and ensure the product page and feed state the same material facts. Do not hide shipping origin, seller identity, exclusions, or other details needed for an informed decision. Ask a second person to click variant selectors and confirm the displayed facts update correctly before publication.
- 07
Publish with an evidence-linked approval record
Route the copy to the product owner and, when necessary, legal, regulatory, accessibility, or technical reviewers. Record which version of the product and evidence each approval covered, who approved the claims, what changed, and the review date. Keep the original draft, final description, and claim evidence in the business's controlled repository; avoid sending confidential formulas, customer data, unpublished launches, or trade secrets to a general-purpose writing tool. Publish only after the storefront fields and any connected marketplace feed pass review. If reviewers cannot confirm a material claim or the product facts conflict, hold that copy and resolve the source record rather than guessing.
- 08
Maintain the description when evidence or the product changes
Set a review trigger for formulation, materials, supplier, packaging, compatibility, certification, regulation, or marketplace-policy changes. Recheck stock-keeping units and variants when the catalog changes, and remove claims that no longer apply to current inventory. Monitor customer questions and returns for signs that the description omits a decision-critical detail, but do not treat positive feedback as substantiation for an objective claim. Preserve prior versions so the business can identify which copy was live for a particular product batch or campaign. Recheck official FTC, Shopify, and marketplace guidance before materially changing claims or entering a new sales channel.
