Jobs & Career · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Write a tailored UK job cover letter that supports your CV
For a UK job applicant preparing a cover letter or application email for one live vacancy. Employers and sectors differ: follow the advert and application portal first, and do not send a letter if the employer says not to. A useful letter adds a specific reason for applying and one or two evidence-backed examples instead of repeating the whole CV. The Nirmion Cover Letter Builder (34969) can help structure a draft, but it cannot verify your qualifications, discover employer facts, know whether AI assistance is permitted, or guarantee an interview. Use placeholders in the tool for personal contact details and confidential information; verify and personalize every sentence before submitting.
MISSION Help a UK job applicant check whether a cover letter is wanted, select verifiable evidence for the vacancy, draft a concise employer-specific letter, and proof it against the employer?s instructions and CV.
Draft a tailored cover letterTHE REAL-WORLD BIT
What happens outside this browser tab?
Check the vacancy instructions and recipient; research the role and employer from reliable public information; map a few important requirements to truthful examples; draft a concise letter that adds context beyond the CV; then proofread it, confirm the portal?s format and keep the exact submitted copy.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Read the vacancy and confirm a cover letter is requested
Save the live job advert and open the employer?s full application instructions. Check whether a cover letter is required, optional, or specifically not wanted; whether it should be pasted into an email or uploaded; any page/word limit, questions to answer, file format, recipient name, accessibility request, or deadline. Employer and sector instructions control the application?do not assume that every UK application needs the same letter or format. Note the exact role title, reference number, team and application channel. If the advert requests a supporting statement or answers to set questions instead, use those instructions rather than sending a generic letter in their place. Create a short checklist from the advert so the draft responds to the employer?s actual request. (Sources 1, 2)
- 02
Research the employer and select the reasons that are genuinely yours
Read the job description closely, then check the employer?s official website, current reports or published work for details relevant to this vacancy. Record two or three role requirements and one concrete, accurate reason this organisation or role interests you. Prefer a named project, service, technical challenge, client group or published priority you can explain in your own words over generic praise such as ?industry-leading?. If the advert names a contact, copy the name and spelling exactly; do not guess a recruiter?s identity from an unrelated directory. If no person is named, use the employer?s stated preferred greeting or a neutral greeting rather than an invented title. Research should make the letter specific, not create claims about the employer?s plans that its own sources do not support. (Sources 1, 2, 3)
- 03
Match one or two requirements to evidence you can defend
For each priority in the advert, choose one real example from paid work, study, volunteering, caring, a personal project or another relevant setting. Note the situation or challenge, what you personally did, the outcome, and how that experience transfers to this job. Use a number only if you can substantiate it; if an outcome was shared, describe your contribution accurately instead of taking credit for the whole team. Oxford and Cambridge careers guidance recommends making the fit explicit and backing claims with relevant experience, while the National Careers Service suggests supporting statements with facts. Do not paste confidential client data, trade secrets, private colleagues? information, or an employer?s unpublished job material into a third-party tool. If you have a career gap or change, mention it only when useful and explain it truthfully; do not disclose health or family details unless you choose to and the employer?s process calls for them. (Sources 1, 2, 3)
- 04
Draft a short letter that adds something beyond your CV
Use the Nirmion Cover Letter Builder (tool 34969) as a structure aid, with placeholders for your name, contact details and any sensitive examples. Start by naming the exact job and, if useful, where you found it; give a specific reason for this role and employer. In one or two body paragraphs, connect your strongest evidence to the advert and state what you could contribute. Add a transition or relevant context only if it helps explain your fit. Close politely, thank the reader and point them to the CV or requested supporting material. Keep each sentence factual and in your own voice; the builder cannot verify a claim or guarantee a result. Follow the employer?s requested length and file format rather than imposing a universal paragraph or page rule. If using any AI assistance, check the employer?s rules and rewrite the draft so it reflects your own experience and style. (Sources 1, 2, 3, 4)
- 05
Proof the final version and preserve what you submitted
Compare the finished letter line by line with the saved advert: job title, employer name, contact person, reference number, required criteria, requested attachment format and submission route. Check that the example claims match your CV and records, dates and contact information are correct, and the letter adds evidence instead of copying the CV paragraph by paragraph. Read it aloud or ask a trusted reviewer to check clarity, tone and spelling; remove unsupported superlatives, stale company research, placeholder text and accidental personal details. Use the correct sign-off for the greeting and the employer?s convention; UK careers services give examples such as ?Yours sincerely? for a named recipient and ?Yours faithfully? for an unnamed greeting, but the employer?s guidance takes priority. Save the final dated copy, the matching CV, the vacancy text and the confirmation/receipt in your private application folder so you can prepare consistently for a later interview. (Sources 1, 2, 3)
