Banking · THE NO-PANIC PLAN

Update your mobile number on an SBI account

Changing the mobile number in a bank's customer record is different from enrolling a number for mobile banking or changing the SIM on a phone. This workflow is specific to domestic SBI retail accounts; SBI NRE/NRO and other non-resident account holders should use the bank's separate NRI instructions. SBI documents describe online, ATM and branch routes, but eligibility and screen labels can change. If the old number is unavailable, do not try to bypass verification: contact SBI or visit a branch and follow its identity checks. Nirmion's KYC Document Checklist can help you note what the branch tells you to bring; it does not verify your identity or update bank records. Never give an OTP, PIN, password or full card details to anyone who contacts you.

MISSION Help a domestic SBI retail customer change the mobile number registered to an account through an official channel and confirm the bank has recorded the update.

Confirm the account and requested change; choose the official SBI route that matches access to your current number and credentials; complete the bank's own verification without sharing codes; use a branch when you cannot complete the approved digital route; then verify the update with SBI and separately review mobile banking, UPI and transaction-alert enrollment.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Confirm what needs to change and whether the old number works

Check that the number you want to replace is the number SBI has registered for account alerts and customer contact, rather than only a number stored in a UPI app, mobile-banking profile or contact list. Identify the SBI account and account holder privately, and decide whether you can still receive messages on the old number and access SBI Internet Banking or an SBI debit card. Do not paste account numbers, card details, customer ID or OTPs into a public checklist. If the SIM was lost or stolen, contact your telecom provider to secure it and use SBI's verified customer-care or branch route; do not rely on a caller or search advertisement offering an update. SBI's official guidance lists different update routes, and the appropriate route depends on available access and bank verification.

  2. 02

Use SBI Internet Banking only if you can complete its checks

If you already use SBI Internet Banking and can satisfy the bank's current authentication, sign in by opening SBI's official Internet Banking page yourself. SBI's published mobile-number instructions describe navigating through My Accounts/Profile and Personal Details to Change Mobile Number, selecting the account and entering the new number; the page shows the last two digits of the currently registered number. Confirm that masked hint is consistent with the number you expect before continuing. Follow the current SBI on-screen prompts, review the number carefully and submit only within the official bank session. The bank's document says update status is sent to the registered mobile; if you cannot receive that message or the page requires a check you cannot complete, stop and use SBI's branch or customer-care guidance instead of trying workarounds.

  3. 03

Use an SBI ATM route only when you have the required access

SBI states that debit-card holders can use ATM services for mobile-number updates. Its published instructions describe choosing Registration, entering the ATM PIN, selecting Mobile Number Registration and Change Mobile Number, then entering and confirming both the old and new numbers. SBI's instructions say the process sends separate OTPs to those numbers and requires the specified confirmation sequence. Use only an SBI ATM and read the current on-screen instructions; do not share or forward OTPs, PINs or reference values to a person who calls or messages you. If the old SIM is unavailable, the ATM path asks for access you do not have, or the screen differs from the bank's current instructions, cancel safely and contact SBI or visit a branch. Do not repeatedly retry after a failed or uncertain submission; ask the bank to confirm whether a request is pending.

  4. 04

Visit or contact SBI when digital verification is unavailable

When the old number is inactive or you cannot satisfy an online or ATM check, use SBI's verified branch locator or customer-care page to confirm where and how to request a change. SBI's published guidance describes a branch Letter of Request followed by bank verification. Before travelling, ask the branch what current identity evidence, account details and original documents it requires for this specific service; requirements can differ by account type and situation. Use Nirmion's KYC Document Checklist to write down SBI's instructions and mark items as prepared, but do not assume the tool's generic list is SBI's required document list. Submit the request through the bank's stated method, ask for an acknowledgement or reference, and keep it securely. Do not send identity documents to an unofficial number, email address or third-party form.

  5. 05

Verify the change and check connected services separately

Wait for SBI's confirmation through the channel it specified, then sign in using SBI's official Internet Banking or contact the bank to confirm the account profile now shows the intended number in masked form. Check that transaction alerts reach the new number and ask SBI whether mobile-banking registration or UPI requires a separate device or app re-verification; do not assume every service changes at the same time. If the confirmation does not arrive, the masked number is unexpected, or you see an OTP or transaction you did not initiate, stop using links in unsolicited messages and contact SBI through its verified contact page immediately. Retain the bank acknowledgement and date of update. Never disclose passwords, card PINs or OTPs, including to someone claiming to be SBI staff.
