Track an Indian passport application by file number
Passport Seva's official tracker asks for the application type, file number, and applicant's date of birth. Keep these details on the Ministry of External Affairs portal and use its own helpdesk if the result is missing or unclear.
MISSION Check the current status of an Indian passport or related Passport Seva application using its file number.

Retrieve the acknowledgement for the submitted application, open Passport Seva's live status tracker, enter the application type and required identifiers, read the returned status without assuming an intermediate stage means approval, and contact the official call centre if needed.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Get the file number from the acknowledgement
Find the acknowledgement issued after the Passport Seva application was submitted. Copy the file number and confirm the applicant's date of birth and the service type, such as Passport or PCC, from the applicant's own records. The file number is not the same as the passport number; do not substitute one for the other.
- 02
Open Passport Seva's current status tracker
Go to the official Passport Seva website and choose Track Passport Application or Track Application Status. Confirm the address ends in passportindia.gov.in or is an official Passport Seva service subdomain before entering personal information. The Ministry warns that lookalike sites and apps may collect applicant details or charge extra fees.
- 03
Enter the application type and identifiers
Select the application type shown by the tracker, then enter the file number and applicant's date of birth exactly as requested. Submit the status lookup. If it returns no match, check the file number against the acknowledgement and check the date format before trying again; do not post the result or identifying details publicly.
- 04
Read the status and follow its next instruction
Use the status as a processing update for this application. Follow any next action shown on the official tracker or linked Passport Seva instructions. An intermediate status is not proof that a passport has been approved or dispatched; if the record says dispatched, use the official delivery information shown for that application.
- 05
Contact the official call centre if the result is unclear
If the tracker stays unavailable, shows an unexplained result, or does not find the application after you checked the acknowledgement details, call Passport Seva's National Call Centre at 1800-258-1800. Passport Seva says the call centre can check status and may ask for the file number and date of birth. Keep those details private and share them only through the official tracker or official call-centre interaction.
