Submit and monitor an XML sitemap in Google Search Console

Make your preferred public page URLs discoverable through a sitemap and track whether Google can fetch and parse it. A sitemap is a crawl hint; it does not guarantee that listed URLs will be crawled or indexed.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Check whether a sitemap is needed and which Search Console property owns the site, select canonical accessible URLs, generate and validate a size-appropriate sitemap, publish and submit its URL, then monitor errors and indexing separately.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Check whether you need a sitemap and confirm site ownership

Check whether your CMS or host already creates a sitemap. Google says small sites of about 500 pages or fewer with pages reachable from the homepage may not need one. If you do need to track a submission, sign in to the Search Console property for the exact protocol and host you will use (for example, https://www.example.com versus https://example.com) and confirm owner permission. If the host manages sitemaps, follow its instructions rather than creating a competing file.

  2. 02

Choose the exact URLs you want Google to consider

Build the list from your site?s authoritative route inventory or CMS. Include fully qualified absolute canonical URLs for pages you want in search. Exclude duplicates, redirects, error pages, private/login-only pages and URLs blocked from crawling or intentionally marked noindex; resolve canonical and access issues first. Verify each page returns the intended live content on the exact host. Do not add guessed paths or a last-modified date unless it reflects a significant, verifiable page change.

  3. 03

Generate and inspect the sitemap at the right scale

For up to 500 supplied same-origin URLs, Nirmion Sitemap Generator can create escaped XML locally in your browser; it does not crawl your site, discover URLs or check whether listed pages are live. Larger sites should use their CMS or a server-side generator, and split files as needed: Google permits at most 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed per sitemap, with a sitemap index as an option. Check that output is UTF-8 XML, contains absolute URLs on the intended host, and has no stale or duplicate entries. Google ignores priority and changefreq; only include lastmod when it is accurate.

  4. 04

Publish the file and submit its public URL

Place the file at a stable, publicly fetchable location, preferably at the site root, and open its exact URL without signing in. Check that it returns the sitemap content and is not blocked by robots.txt or access controls. In the matching Search Console property, open the Sitemaps report, enter the sitemap URL and submit; you are telling Google where the file is, not uploading the file to Google. If you lack owner permission, Google documents referencing the sitemap URL in robots.txt instead.

  5. 05

Read the report, fix fetch or parse errors, and set expectations

Check the Sitemaps report periodically for the latest fetch status, last read time, discovered page count and errors. For ?Couldn?t fetch,? confirm the exact URL, HTTP availability, property/host, login rules and robots.txt. For parse or URL errors, correct the XML, absolute host, redirects, duplicate tags or invalid dates, publish the repaired file and resubmit after a material fix. A successful sitemap only queues eligible URLs for crawling; use Page indexing or URL Inspection for individual pages and do not promise or infer indexing from sitemap submission.
