Ecommerce · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Set up customer order tracking for a Shopify store
A tracking link only helps when the fulfillment has the correct carrier and tracking number and the customer can reach a useful order-status page. This Shopify-focused workflow covers carrier data, shipment notifications, partial fulfillment and a test journey. Tracking events come from the carrier or fulfillment integration, so update timing and accuracy vary; Nirmion can help draft the page copy but cannot track a real parcel.
MISSION Configure reliable shipment tracking and customer status updates for Shopify orders, then verify the experience with a test order.

Map fulfillment sources and available tracking services; confirm where tracking data enters Shopify; configure customer notifications and tracking-page copy; fulfill and verify an order with correct carrier data; monitor exceptions and maintain the flow when integrations change.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Map the fulfillment paths and choose trackable services
List each sales channel, fulfillment location, carrier, label-purchase path and third-party fulfillment app that handles Shopify orders. Confirm which services supply a valid tracking number and events, whether a single order can ship in multiple packages, and who owns missing or incorrect tracking data. Shopify notes that some low-cost services do not provide tracking; if shipment visibility is important, choose a service that includes it and confirm the product/service details with the carrier. Do not promise live location updates or a delivery date when the carrier does not provide those events. Keep customer names, addresses, order numbers and live tracking IDs inside Shopify and approved fulfillment systems, not in Nirmion tools.
- 02
Confirm how each shipment adds tracking to the Shopify order
For labels purchased in Shopify, check that the tracking number and carrier are attached to the fulfillment automatically. For a supported external carrier, enter its tracking number during fulfillment or add it later from the order's Fulfilled section. If Shopify detects the wrong carrier, select the correct one manually; if the carrier is not listed, choose Other and enter the carrier's complete tracking URL. For a fulfillment app, verify whether it sends tracking back to Shopify and who corrects failures. For split shipments, confirm each fulfillment has its own correct tracking number. Never mark an order fulfilled merely to trigger a customer email before the shipment is actually ready; the order status should reflect what happened.
- 03
Set customer-facing tracking copy and notification templates
Use a short, calm message that explains where the customer can find the order-status link, when carrier scans may first appear, how to contact support if a link is broken, and how partial shipments will be shown. The Order Tracking Page Copy Builder (tool 584) can help draft this explanatory text, but it does not create Shopify's status page, insert a tracking URL, connect a carrier, send notifications or fetch parcel events. In Shopify, review Settings > Notifications and the order confirmation, shipping confirmation and shipping update templates. Default templates include the order-status link; customized templates may need a current order status URL. Check existing customizations before editing: Shopify warns that reverting a template to default removes its other custom changes.
- 04
Run a test order through fulfillment and the customer view
Place a test order using a supported carrier and an email address you control, then fulfill it in the same way your team or app normally does and add a valid tracking number. Open the shipping notification on both desktop and mobile, follow the order-status link, and verify that the carrier name, tracking link, shipment status and any partial-package details match the test shipment. Confirm the notification contains no internal notes or another customer's information. If the tracking number arrives after fulfillment, use the documented edit-tracking flow and verify whether the update email should be sent. Record each failed handoff and fix the originating integration or template; do not assume a successful email means the carrier has scanned the parcel.
- 05
Monitor exceptions and keep status promises aligned with carrier data
Assign an owner to review shipments with missing tracking, unsupported carrier detection, stale pre-transit events, split-package gaps, failed emails and customer reports of a broken link. Shopify's notifications for out-for-delivery and delivered statuses depend on events from the carrier or fulfillment app, and event timing and accuracy differ by source; explain that plainly in help copy and route an exception to support rather than inventing a delivery status. Compare a small sample of fulfillment records to carrier pages after changing an app, carrier service or email template. Keep a change log for settings, test results and the review date, and repeat the test whenever the fulfillment integration or customer notification flow changes.
