Set up BHIM UPI with an Indian bank account
This guide covers a personal bank account in BHIM, NPCI's UPI app. It does not cover RuPay credit cards, wallets, UPI Lite, mandates or business onboarding; their eligibility and steps differ. Use only the official BHIM app listing and the mobile number registered with your bank. Account discovery, supported account types, SMS verification and PIN setup can depend on the bank, handset and current app. Never share a UPI PIN, OTP, debit-card details, screen access or remote-control access with anyone claiming to help.
MISSION Help an Indian bank customer register BHIM, link an eligible account and set up UPI safely.

Install BHIM from its official store listing, verify the bank-registered SIM, protect app access, link an eligible bank account, set or synchronize the UPI PIN only inside BHIM, then verify the linked account and transaction status before relying on it.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Install the official BHIM app and prepare the registered SIM
Open the Google Play Store or Apple App Store directly and verify the publisher and app identity against NPCI's BHIM page before installing. Keep the SIM whose number is registered with your bank active in this phone, with mobile network access and permission for the app's registration SMS; use the SIM selection BHIM requests. Check that the bank account is active and that the bank has your current mobile number. Do not install an APK sent by a message or use a link from an unsolicited caller. BHIM registration may fail if the wrong SIM is selected, outgoing SMS is blocked, the device has no network, or the number recorded by the bank differs. Resolve those issues through your carrier or bank before retrying; never disclose an OTP to another person.
- 02
Complete BHIM's device verification and lock the app
Open BHIM, choose a language, select the bank-registered SIM and complete the in-app mobile verification exactly as displayed. Allow only the permissions needed for that flow and set the app passcode requested by BHIM; this passcode unlocks the app and is not the UPI PIN used to authorize payments. If SMS verification fails, check SIM selection, signal, SMS balance or plan, device date/time and bank-registered number, then use only BHIM's displayed retry or support route. Avoid repeated attempts if the app or bank indicates a cooldown. Do not let a caller view the verification code, app passcode or screen, and do not grant remote-access permissions to troubleshoot registration.
- 03
Find and link the correct bank account
In BHIM, open the bank-account option and choose the bank that holds the account you intend to use. Select only an account BHIM actually discovers for the verified mobile number, then check the masked account details shown in the app before confirming. NPCI explains that the mobile number verified in a UPI app must match the number linked to the bank account; the bank also decides which account types are discoverable. If no account appears, check the selected SIM and the bank's registered number, then ask the bank whether that account type supports UPI. Do not type account credentials into a third-party website, send a bank statement to an unofficial helper, or assume a missing account can be fixed by changing unrelated profile details.
- 04
Set or synchronize a UPI PIN inside BHIM
Follow BHIM's bank-account screen to set a UPI PIN for the selected account. NPCI's current BHIM instructions describe using the last six digits and expiry date of the debit card linked to that account; exact verification options may vary by bank and app version. If BHIM offers a supported synchronize option for a PIN already set for that same account, use the in-app explanation rather than creating a second PIN by guesswork. Enter card details, OTP and the new PIN only into the genuine BHIM flow. The app passcode, bank MPIN, card PIN and UPI PIN are different credentials. Never tell a person your UPI PIN or enter it to receive money; a UPI PIN authorizes a debit. If setup fails, stop and use BHIM or bank support instead of sharing secrets.
- 05
Verify setup and know how to respond to suspicious requests
Return to BHIM's bank-account screen and confirm the expected masked account is listed before using it. For a first payment, inspect the recipient name and amount shown in BHIM before authorizing, and enter the UPI PIN only when you intend to send money or approve a clearly understood debit. To receive money, share only the UPI ID or QR you intend to share; do not approve an unexpected collect request or scan a QR supplied as a way to receive funds. Check BHIM's transaction history for success, pending or failure status, and raise a dispute through the transaction's in-app issue option or your bank when needed. If your phone is lost, block the SIM and contact your bank promptly. Nirmion has no tool that can link a bank account or safely handle a UPI PIN, OTP or card credentials, so keep setup and payment verification in BHIM and your bank's official channels.
