Utilities & Bills · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Resolve an Indian subscription billing or cancellation grievance
Use this guide for a subscription sold or supplied in India when a renewal, cancellation, disclosure or charge is disputed. First gather the actual plan terms and transaction records, then cancel with the merchant and separately review any recurring payment mandate in the bank, card or UPI app that created it. Those actions are not interchangeable. The Reserve Bank of India and NPCI provide payment-mandate controls, while the National Consumer Helpline accepts pre-litigation consumer grievances and issues docket numbers. NCH does not guarantee a refund or decide your legal claim. Keep full card numbers, PINs, passwords, OTPs and bank credentials out of complaint attachments.
MISSION Document an India-based subscription billing or cancellation issue, cancel merchant service and its payment mandate separately, request a remedy, and escalate an unresolved case through the National Consumer Helpline.

What happens outside this browser tab?
Identify the merchant, plan, renewal and payment route; save terms and transaction evidence; cancel the subscription with the merchant and independently pause or revoke the matching payment mandate if appropriate; request a specific remedy in writing; then register and track an NCH grievance with a concise, redacted evidence pack if the provider does not resolve it.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Identify the subscription, renewal event and payment route
Write down the merchant's exact legal or trading name, plan name, sign-up date, advertised price, trial end date, renewal date, amount and transaction reference. Find the confirmation email, invoice, in-app receipt, current plan page and cancellation terms as they appeared when you subscribed; save dated screenshots or PDFs without altering them. Check the bank, card or UPI statement to identify which payment instrument and merchant descriptor were actually charged. Keep only masked account details in your working notes and do not upload PINs, OTPs, full card numbers or passwords. Use a private tracker for renewal dates and amounts if useful, but treat the merchant's terms and your issuer's transaction record as the evidence of what happened.
- 02
Cancel or change the service through the merchant's official account
Open the provider's official app or website using a link you already trust, locate the subscription-management page and follow the stated cancellation steps. Before confirming, note whether the action ends renewal, ends access immediately or only takes effect at the next billing date. Save the confirmation screen, email, date, reference number and any stated final service date. If the provider makes cancellation unavailable or the terms conflict with the purchase record, send a concise written cancellation request through its published support channel and keep a copy. A cancellation letter can help organize that request, but generating a letter does not cancel the service by itself. Do not use a support link from a suspicious text or give remote access to your device to anyone claiming to process a refund.
- 03
Review and manage the matching recurring payment mandate
Check the payment method that authorized recurring billing. For a UPI AutoPay mandate, open the official UPI app's AutoPay or mandate-management area, confirm the merchant and mandate details, and use the available pause or revoke control if that is what you intend; save the resulting status. For a card or other e-mandate, check your issuer's official app or contact channel for its current recurring-payment controls. RBI's e-mandate framework covers recurring transactions and requires issuer notifications in applicable cases; NPCI's UPI AutoPay guidance describes lifecycle controls including revoke, pause and modify. Do not assume that cancelling with the merchant has also revoked the bank-side mandate, or that revoking a mandate alone ends your service contract. If you do not recognize the debit, report it promptly to the bank or issuer using its official channel and follow its dispute process.
- 04
Ask the provider for a specific correction and preserve its response
Send the provider a short, factual complaint from its official help channel. Include the account email or customer ID only as needed, plan name, relevant dates, disputed amount, transaction reference with sensitive digits masked, cancellation proof and what you want the provider to do, such as confirm cancellation, correct a billing error or explain the contractual basis for a charge. Ask for a case number and an expected response date. If the checkout or cancellation path appeared to use a subscription trap or another dark pattern, describe the exact screen, action and consequence and attach the dated evidence; do not label conduct unlawful just because you dislike the outcome. India's consumer rules and the 2023 dark-pattern guidelines have specific scope and factual conditions. Keep the provider's full reply and any revised invoice, refund status or cancellation record.
- 05
Escalate through NCH and track the docket
If the provider has not resolved the issue, register a consumer grievance through the official National Consumer Helpline portal or another channel currently listed by the Department of Consumer Affairs. Select the closest sector, grievance category and company, state the timeline and requested remedy clearly, and attach only the relevant redacted receipts, terms, cancellation proof and provider case response. Save the NCH docket number and use the official Track Grievance function to follow updates; keep a dated record of each response and additional document. NCH is a pre-litigation grievance route: it forwards the matter for response, but does not guarantee the requested outcome. If it remains unresolved and you want formal adjudication, review the current Consumer Commission filing guidance on the Government's e-Jagriti portal or consult an appropriate consumer adviser. Do not attach authentication secrets or unrelated financial records.
