Replace a Lost or Damaged Maharashtra Driving Licence
Maharashtra's Motor Vehicle Department lists duplicate driving licences among its Sarathi services and provides an official replacement route. First confirm that the licence record exists and that the case is a lost, torn, or defaced permanent licence. The current portal and issuing RTO control documents, fee, verification, and delivery; old manuals can show outdated fees. This guide covers the process without promising that every case is faceless or instantly issued.
MISSION Apply for an official duplicate Maharashtra driving licence after loss or damage and verify the replacement through Sarathi and the issuing RTO.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Check whether this is a lost, damaged, or unavailable record
Confirm that the licence was issued in Maharashtra and distinguish a lost card from a torn or defaced card, an online record that is not visible, or an application still awaiting dispatch. Maharashtra's duplicate-licence guidance covers a permanent licence that is lost, torn, or defaced. If Sarathi cannot find the licence details or the record is still pending, contact the issuing RTO first; applying for a duplicate against a record problem can create a second case. If the licence may have been stolen, make a truthful police report where appropriate and follow the current RTO instructions for any report they require.
- 02
Verify Maharashtra and the licensing office
Open the official Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Department page for duplicate licences and follow its ?apply online? route to Sarathi. Confirm the issuing RTO and the State selection match the licence record. If the licence was issued outside Maharashtra or the record is migrated/legacy, ask the issuing authority which RTO controls replacement before proceeding. Use transport.maharashtra.gov.in or the linked government portal; do not trust a similar-looking domain, paid search result, or unsolicited recovery service. The department lists duplicate DL among Sarathi-related services, but the State portal's current flow and RTO instructions determine the case-specific next steps.
- 03
Read the current duplicate-service instructions and fee
After selecting Maharashtra in Sarathi, open the duplicate driving-licence service and review the current eligibility, document declaration, delivery or appointment steps, and fee shown before payment. The Maharashtra department's guide explains the official route, but older screenshots and manuals may display historical fee amounts or flows. Do not copy an old fee into your decision: rely on the amount shown by the live government service or confirmed by the RTO. If the service is unavailable or the portal flags a record mismatch, stop and contact the official licensing authority instead of paying a third party.
- 04
Prepare any evidence the current RTO actually asks for
Maharashtra's current service page and Sarathi instructions control which declaration, police report, identity proof, or supporting document is required for your case. MoRTH Form 2 includes a duplicate driving-licence option and a document annexure, but do not assume every listed item applies to every Maharashtra replacement. Keep a scan of the licence details or other proof only if the authority requests it. Government Form Checklist (845) can store a generic reminder such as ?confirm RTO requirements?; do not enter a licence number, name, date of birth, address, report number, application ID, or document image in the tool.
- 05
Apply through Sarathi and save the acknowledgement
Submit the duplicate request using the official Maharashtra Sarathi route, enter licence particulars carefully, and confirm the RTO shown before continuing. Upload only documents requested by the live service and pay only through the official payment screen if a fee is due. Save the application number, acknowledgement, transaction reference, date, and next instruction privately. Do not send an OTP, password, payment PIN, or complete licence image to a caller or messaging group. If the details shown do not match your licence or the request is rejected, pause and ask the issuing RTO how to correct the record before submitting again.
- 06
Complete any scrutiny, verification, or delivery step
Track the application using the status option provided by Sarathi and follow any instruction to visit the named RTO, show an original record, or provide an additional document. A faceless or online option does not mean every record can be completed without office review; legacy records, missing data, or a mismatch may require the authority to investigate. Use only the official contact route for that RTO and retain receipts for any physical submission. A payment confirmation or submitted status is not the replacement licence; wait for the official decision and dispatch or digital-record update.
- 07
Verify the replacement and protect the old licence details
When the duplicate is issued, inspect the card or official digital licence record for the correct holder, licence number, vehicle classes, and validity dates. If you later find the old physical card, do not use both as separate licences; ask the RTO how to handle the recovered card and follow its instruction. If the replacement is not delivered, details are wrong, or status stalls, contact the issuing RTO through its official grievance channel with the application reference. Keep the acknowledgement and licence data private, and do not post a full card or QR code publicly.
