Register an Indian sole proprietorship on the Udyam portal
A focused guide for an Indian sole proprietor applying for MSME Udyam registration through the Ministry of MSME portal. Udyam is not business incorporation, GST registration or a local trade licence. Check the portal's current enterprise classification and keep Aadhaar details and OTPs inside the official Government of India flow.

Confirm the current MSME category and whether this enterprise already has an Udyam/UAM record, prepare the proprietor's verified details, use only the official free registration portal, complete its Aadhaar/PAN and business-information steps accurately, then verify and save the issued certificate. Handle tax registrations and local/sector permissions separately.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm this is the right registration
Read the Ministry of MSME's current Udyam classification and instructions for the financial year. Confirm the activity and combined investment/turnover facts fit a current micro, small or medium enterprise category. Check whether this enterprise already has an Udyam or legacy UAM record before starting: the portal allows one Udyam registration per enterprise, with activities included under that registration. This process does not incorporate a business or decide GST, municipal, labour or sector-license obligations.
- 02
Prepare the proprietor's information securely
For a sole proprietorship, the official portal requires the proprietor's Aadhaar and name exactly as shown on Aadhaar. Have the current PAN and GST details available as applicable, plus accurate business/activity and address information requested by the live form. The portal states that government PAN/GST data is integrated and no supporting documents need to be uploaded for registration. Do not send Aadhaar, PAN or business records to a third-party registration site or into a Nirmion tool.
- 03
Open only the official Udyam registration form
Type or verify the official Government of India domain, udyamregistration.gov.in, and choose new Udyam registration for an enterprise that is not already registered. The Ministry warns that private websites, agencies and people are not authorized to perform MSME registration. The registration is free and paperless; do not pay a fee to an agent. Enter Aadhaar and name in the official form and complete its consent and OTP verification yourself. Never disclose the OTP to a caller or intermediary.
- 04
Complete the live form using accurate records
Continue through the portal's current PAN verification, basic details, official address, plant/unit and other-details sections. Select the organization type as proprietorship and describe the actual business activity; enter or confirm linked tax/business facts only where requested. Review every self-declared value before submission. If Aadhaar, PAN, GST records, activity classification or existing-registration status do not match, stop and resolve that mismatch with the relevant official source or Ministry support instead of making up a value or starting a duplicate registration.
- 05
Verify and keep the Udyam certificate
After submission, save the permanent Udyam Registration Number and download the online certificate. Use the portal's official Print/Verify service to confirm the number and certificate/QR details resolve to the intended enterprise. Store the certificate with business records. The Ministry portal says Udyam registration does not need periodic renewal; still use its update/correction service if enterprise information changes and keep monitoring current instructions. Apply separately for any GST registration, local or sector approvals that actually apply.
