Redesignate an Indian NRO Account After Returning to India
RBI says an NRO account may be designated as a resident account when the account holder returns to India with an intention to stay for an uncertain period; a temporary visit is different. This guide helps an existing NRO holder prepare a bank-confirmed transition, protect linked payments and deposits, submit current KYC evidence, and verify the result. It does not decide FEMA or income-tax residency, prescribe a universal bank form, or authorize a remittance. Contact your bank and seek qualified advice when your status or account treatment is unclear. KYC Document Checklist is optional and should contain generic labels only, never account numbers or identity documents.
MISSION Notify the bank and request the appropriate resident redesignation for an existing NRO account after returning to India with an intention to stay for an uncertain period.

What happens outside this browser tab?
Distinguish a temporary visit from a return intended to stay; inventory linked accounts and instructions; obtain the bank's current forms and evidence list; submit accurate requests through verified channels; resolve KYC checks; verify account classification and product effects; then update future payments and confirm separate treatment for cross-border funds.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Check whether the return is temporary or signals a change in status
This workflow is for an existing NRO holder returning to India with an intention to stay for an uncertain period. RBI distinguishes that situation from a temporary visit: a short visit by itself does not mean the NRO account should be redesignedated. FEMA residential status depends on the applicable facts and rules, so do not decide solely from a travel date, tax label, or this guide. If your move is temporary, your employment or business arrangement is unclear, or the bank and your professional adviser give different views, explain the facts to the bank and obtain qualified advice before requesting a change. Ask the bank to confirm whether redesignation is appropriate and which account treatment applies to each linked deposit or facility.
- 02
Inventory linked accounts and pending activity before contacting the bank
List the NRO savings/current account, fixed or recurring deposits, joint holders, standing instructions, loan or lien links, debit card, cheque book, payment mandates, inward rent or pension receipts, and any pending remittance request. This is a private planning note; do not upload account numbers or statements to a generic checklist tool. Ask the bank which services will continue, which payment instructions need replacement, and how credits arriving during the transition will be handled. Identify pending cheques, refunds, tax-related receipts, and deposits nearing maturity so you can avoid a failed payment or an unplanned rollover. Do not close an account or move its balance simply because you are returning; first get the bank's written instructions on classification and linked products.
- 03
Request the bank?s current redesignation procedure and document list
Contact the bank using its official app, secure message facility, published phone number, or verified branch. State that you have returned and intend to stay in India for an uncertain period, then ask what declaration, request form, proof of updated address or residency, identity/KYC refresh, tax-residency information, original-document review, joint-holder consent, and deposit instructions it requires. RBI describes the regulatory possibility of redesignating an NRO account; it does not publish one universal customer form or timeline. Track only generic document labels and completion status in KYC Document Checklist. Do not enter account numbers, Aadhaar/PAN, passport details, addresses, scans, tax values, or credentials into that tool.
- 04
Complete the bank?s request without guessing at legal or tax status
Use the latest form and instructions supplied by your bank. Provide accurate dates, contact details, current residential address, and requested declarations, and ask how the bank wants any residency or tax-residency fields completed. FEMA and income-tax residency are separate questions; do not treat the account redesignation as a determination of your income-tax status or submit a tax declaration you have not verified. For joint accounts, ask whether each holder must sign or update KYC. If using SBI, its published NRI FAQ and service-form page show SBI-specific maintenance routes and forms; other banks may require a secure online request, branch visit, or different evidence. Save the bank's case reference and a copy of exactly what you submitted.
- 05
Submit evidence through the verified channel and resolve any deficiency
Send only the documents the bank requests through its authenticated portal, secure messaging channel, or verified branch process. Confirm whether originals must be shown, copies need attestation, or a signature must match the bank's existing record. If the bank requests additional evidence, ask for the exact missing item and permitted alternatives through an official contact route; do not respond to an unsolicited caller by sharing an OTP, password, PIN, or remote-access code. Keep a dated record of the submission and acknowledgement without storing sensitive images in a public or shared checklist. Follow up using the case reference if the stated processing window passes, and ask the bank to preserve or explain any time-sensitive standing instructions while review is pending.
- 06
Verify the bank?s confirmation and the resulting account terms
Wait for the bank to confirm completion. Check the account classification, account-holder names, joint mandate, branch, linked deposits, balance and transaction access, nomination, debit card, standing instructions, and contact details against the bank's confirmation. Ask what happens to interest rates, premature-closure terms, loan links, charges, and any services attached to NRO status; the answer depends on the product and bank. If the app still labels the account NRO, or the bank's confirmation conflicts with an active debit or incoming credit, ask the bank to reconcile it before using the account for a transaction whose permitted treatment depends on status. Keep the confirmation and effective date for your records.
- 07
Update future payments and seek advice on cross-border funds
Once the bank confirms the change, update employers, tenants, pension administrators, investment payers, bill mandates, and payment recipients as needed. Ask the bank how it will classify later rupee receipts and what account to use for future overseas transfers. Do not assume that redesignating an NRO balance automatically makes it freely repatriable, converts a linked NRE/FCNR deposit, or settles tax obligations. If you hold NRE or FCNR(B) funds too, RBI and SBI describe separate options and product rules for returning customers; request treatment of each account individually. Before remitting funds abroad or moving balances between account types, confirm current RBI rules, tax documentation, and bank requirements for your own facts.
