Prepare KYC documents for an Indian resident savings account

For an adult resident individual preparing to apply for a savings account in India. This workflow helps you identify the applicable KYC route and make a bank-specific document checklist; it does not open an account or guarantee acceptance. Requirements can vary by bank, product, onboarding channel, and circumstances. Minors, joint applicants, NRIs, foreign nationals, business accounts, and people without an OVD should use the bank's dedicated process. Nirmion's checklist is for generic document labels only: do not enter Aadhaar or PAN numbers, upload scans, share OTPs, or put personal data into an online tool.

MISSION Help one adult Indian resident identify and prepare the KYC information a chosen bank may request for a savings account, while checking current RBI guidance, bank-specific requirements, and safe submission steps.

Prepare a bank-specific KYC checklist

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Choose the exact bank and savings product; establish whether you are a new customer or already KYC-compliant with that bank; check the current RBI individual-account baseline and the selected bank's product checklist; resolve address or name differences through the bank's prescribed route; then submit only through the bank's verified official channel and retain its acknowledgement.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Define the applicant and the exact account

This checklist is for one adult Indian resident applying for an individual savings account. Write down the bank, exact savings product, branch or digital channel, and the date you checked its requirements; banks can ask for product-specific information beyond the general RBI KYC baseline. If the account will be joint, for a minor, for an NRI or foreign national, or connected with a business, stop here and open that bank's dedicated instructions because additional or different identification and consent rules can apply. Do not treat a list from another bank as interchangeable. Start from the bank's official website or visit a branch whose address you independently verify, and save the exact document page or application checklist for later comparison. This workflow prepares documents only: it does not select an account, assess eligibility, or promise that a bank will accept a document.

  2. 02

Check whether the bank already holds your valid KYC

Ask the bank whether you are already KYC-compliant for another account or service with that same bank and whether your identity or address details have changed. RBI guidance says a KYC-compliant customer opening another account with the same regulated entity generally need not resubmit documents unless identity or address information has changed. If applying to another bank, ask whether it can retrieve a current CKYC record and what consent or additional checks it needs; do not assume an identifier alone guarantees that no other document will be requested. RBI describes exceptions where retrieved information has changed, is incomplete or outdated, or the institution needs further verification or due diligence. Use only the bank's authenticated channel to discuss your CKYC identifier, and never send it to an unsolicited caller or message link. If the bank confirms new KYC is needed, continue with the current document checklist in the next step.

  3. 03

Build a bank-specific list from the current official requirements

For a new individual account, RBI's FAQ describes the general baseline as one accepted Officially Valid Document (OVD) or equivalent e-document containing name and address, plus PAN or its equivalent e-document or Form 60; the regulated entity may require other documents based on its rules and the account. The FAQ lists passport, driving licence, proof of possession of Aadhaar number, voter identity card, signed NREGA job card, and National Population Register letter as OVD examples. Check the exact product page and application form for any current photograph, application, income, tax-residency, or channel-specific requirements, and record the date checked. Aadhaar is not generally mandatory for KYC according to the RBI FAQ, subject to the stated exception for a notified benefit or subsidy scheme. Use the KYC Document Checklist (34683) only to arrange generic labels such as “OVD”, “PAN or Form 60”, and “bank-specific item”; it does not determine acceptance or verify compliance. Never put document numbers, images, signatures, account details, or other personal data into that tool.

  4. 04

Resolve address, name, and document mismatches with the bank

Before submitting, compare the name and address across your selected OVD, PAN/Form 60 information, and the bank's application. Do not edit, crop, or alter an official document to make fields appear consistent. If your OVD lacks your current address, RBI's FAQ lists specific deemed-OVD address evidence for limited purposes, including a utility bill no more than two months old and certain other listed records; it also says an OVD with the current address must be provided within three months in the described route. Ask the bank which evidence and follow-up date apply to your case before relying on this option. If your legal name changed, or you do not possess an OVD, ask the bank for the currently permitted document or account route; the RBI FAQ describes possible special procedures, but their eligibility and conditions need institution-level confirmation. Record the bank's answer and the version/date of its checklist so a later reviewer can see why you selected each item.

  5. 05

Submit through a verified channel and close the loop

Submit only through the bank's official app or website that you opened independently, or at a verified branch using its stated process. RBI lists face-to-face, permitted digital, Aadhaar-based, and video-based routes, but a bank's availability and steps vary; follow the chosen bank's live instructions and complete any identity check directly with its authorized process. Do not follow unsolicited “KYC update” links, disclose an OTP, PIN, password, biometric, or screen-sharing code to a caller, or send scans to an unverified agent. If an upload is required, check the domain and privacy notice first, submit only requested material, and keep copies under your own secure storage policy. Save the bank's acknowledgement or application reference, note any missing item or follow-up deadline, and check status using the same official channel. If the bank rejects a document or requests more evidence, ask for the exact reason and accepted alternatives; do not assume the checklist tool or another bank's page settles the decision.
