Complete a first-year college application through Common App
This walkthrough is for a first-year student applying through Common App during the 2026–27 cycle. Common App is used by participating colleges, and each college sets its own deadlines, essay/testing requirements, recommenders and fees; verify those in the current Common App account and the college's own admissions page. Transfer, graduate and non-member applications follow different routes. Common App can retain some shared responses when accounts roll over, but college-specific writing and supplements should be checked for the intended cycle. The linked Nirmion Essay Word Count Checker only counts/organizes entered text in the current browser tab; do not use it to store sensitive personal details or treat its count as an admissions decision.
MISSION Build and submit a first-year application through Common App to one or more member colleges, meet each college's current requirements, coordinate school forms and recommenders, and verify each submission.

What happens outside this browser tab?
Confirm that Common App first-year is the right route and build a college-specific requirements calendar; gather accurate school, activity, testing and recommender details; create an account and complete the shared application; finish each college's separate questions, essays and supplements; then review, pay or apply an eligible fee waiver, submit each college application and confirm receipt.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm the first-year route and build a college-by-college list
Use the Common App first-year route if you are applying as a first-time undergraduate applicant; transfer and returning-student routes have different applications. Search for the colleges you intend to apply to and confirm each one currently accepts Common App for your program and entry term. For every college, record its actual deadline, application fee or fee-waiver process, required testing policy, school forms, recommendations, personal-essay rule, college-specific questions, writing supplements and portfolio/interview requirements when listed. Common App says colleges choose their own requirements, and its in-account My Colleges pages and current Requirements Grid are the places to verify them. Check the college's official admissions site too, especially for a program or international-applicant route with extra documents. Use the 2026–27 materials for this cycle; deadlines and requirements from the previous year can be wrong. Keep a single private calendar with a separate row for each college and a buffer date for recommenders and school documents.
- 02
Gather accurate school records and ask supporters early
Before entering the shared application, collect the information Common App identifies for first-year students: high-school transcript and current courses/grades, activities and responsibilities, academic honors, testing history and parent/guardian details when requested. Do not assume every college requires the same transcript format or test scores; check the individual college's rules before arranging official delivery or self-reporting. Ask your counselor which school report and transcript steps they handle, and ask each teacher or other recommender privately before inviting them. Record each person's preferred email and the college-specific recommender count/role in your private tracker, then give them the actual deadlines and enough time to submit. Some colleges may ask for a parent form for an Early Decision agreement. Common App describes a fee waiver that may require counselor confirmation or a college-specific waiver. Keep grades, family information and recommender contact details in the official account or your private files, not in the linked Nirmion tool.
- 03
Create your account and complete the shared Common App sections
Create or sign in to your account only through the official Common App service. Check the registration type carefully, then complete the shared profile and My Common Application sections using records you can verify: identity and contact details, education history, current courses/grades where requested, testing, activities, responsibilities, honors and family information. Enter dates, school names and course details consistently with the school record; do not invent a GPA scale or round a score unless the form tells you how. Common App accounts can roll over and retain some shared answers, but review those answers for accuracy every cycle. A saved answer is not a submitted application. Keep your password and recovery codes private, and sign out on a shared device. If a field does not match your school system, ask your counselor or the Common App applicant support center before selecting a misleading answer.
- 04
Complete each college's writing, questions and recommendation setup
Open each college in My Colleges and work through its Program Materials or college-specific questions separately. Check whether the personal essay is required or optional for that college, whether a writing supplement appears, and whether a portfolio or extra short response is requested; requirements can differ even within the same application platform. Use the official 2026–27 prompt list and each college's own page to plan the correct response. Keep the essay in your own voice and check the live word limit and formatting in Common App before submission. The optional Nirmion Essay Word Count Checker (ID 41750) can count text entered in the current browser tab, but it does not check prompt fit, quality, plagiarism, a college's current maximum, or admissions requirements. Because essays can include private life details, use only a draft you are comfortable entering, remove identifying or sensitive information where possible, and clear it from the tool afterward. Invite and assign recommenders only after confirming each college's requested role and count; Common App sends their forms separately to colleges as they submit them.
- 05
Review, submit each application and confirm receipt
For each college, check the dashboard for every required part: the shared Common Application, that college's questions, any writing supplement, and any counselor/teacher forms that the college requires. Common App's first-year guide describes submission as review, pay if applicable, and submit; read the displayed certification and fee/waiver terms before confirming. Submit each college separately, preferably before your own buffer deadline, and do not assume a saved section or recommender invitation is a completed application. Save the official confirmation and submission timestamp in a private place, then check both the Common App dashboard and the college's applicant portal/email for receipt and any missing-document notice. Recommenders' school reports and recommendations are transmitted separately, so check their status without asking them to send private copies to you. If a payment or submission state is unclear, use the official support route before resubmitting or paying twice. The application is complete only when each college's official status confirms receipt of the required materials; admission decisions and financial-aid applications are later, separate processes.
