Prepare for a U.S. domestic flight with an airport-ready packing list

A domestic flight checklist has to connect the airline's booking rules with TSA checkpoint requirements and FAA baggage-safety restrictions. Those are different rule sets: TSA decides what may pass screening, FAA rules address dangerous goods and batteries in baggage, and the airline sets its own bag size, check-in and boarding cutoffs. This guide is for flights within the United States; verify the current rules for your airline, airport and specific items before leaving. Nirmion's Packing List Generator can organize items into carry-on and checked-bag groups, but it does not validate airline baggage limits, guarantee checkpoint approval or replace the TSA and FAA lists.

MISSION Help a U.S. domestic air traveler verify booking details, meet TSA identification and screening requirements, pack restricted items safely, and prepare for airline changes.

Build a carry-on and checked-bag list

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Confirm the ticket, passenger names and airline cutoffs; check the current TSA ID list; review each restricted item against TSA screening and FAA dangerous-goods guidance; build separate carry-on and checked-bag lists while keeping essential medication and permitted spare batteries accessible; then monitor airline alerts and save the carrier's current change and refund instructions.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Confirm the itinerary and the operating airline's cutoffs

Open the airline's official reservation and confirm travel date, origin and destination airports, passenger names, confirmation code, operating carrier and any connection. Review the airline's current check-in, bag-drop, carry-on dimensions, weight limits, personal-item size, seat and boarding cutoffs; a ticket sold by one airline may be operated by another carrier whose baggage process matters. Check whether a child traveling alone, a passenger needing assistance, a mobility device or special equipment requires advance coordination. Save the airline's official app or contact page and keep the booking details available offline. Do not assume a generic airport arrival recommendation guarantees boarding; follow the actual airport and carrier deadlines on the itinerary.

  2. 02

Verify acceptable identification for every traveler

For each adult traveler, compare the ID you plan to carry with TSA's current acceptable-identification list shortly before travel; the list can change. TSA says adults 18 and older need acceptable ID at the checkpoint, including a REAL ID-compliant state credential or another listed form such as a U.S. passport. A standard noncompliant driver's license is not an acceptable airport ID under the current REAL ID rules. TSA does not require children under 18 to show identification for domestic travel, but an airline may set its own documentation requirements, especially for an unaccompanied minor. Keep the physical ID accessible rather than packed in checked baggage. If your ID is lost, expired or noncompliant, check TSA and your carrier directly before departing; additional identity screening is not guaranteed to succeed.

  3. 03

Check screening rules and battery restrictions item by item

Search TSA's current What Can I Bring guidance for each questionable object and note whether it is allowed in carry-on, checked baggage or only under special instructions. Apply the 3-1-1 rule to ordinary carry-on liquids, gels and aerosols; medically necessary liquids have separate screening instructions, so review TSA's current medication guidance and keep necessary items reachable. Then check FAA PackSafe for lithium batteries, power banks, smart luggage and other dangerous goods: spare lithium batteries and power banks generally belong in the cabin, and some battery sizes or devices require airline approval or are forbidden. When rules differ, follow the applicable TSA screening and FAA transport requirements and ask the airline about stricter cabin or baggage policies. Do not pack damaged or recalled battery devices for the flight.

  4. 04

Build a carry-on and checked-bag list you can actually use

Use Nirmion's Packing List Generator to create separate carry-on and checked-bag lists. Put your acceptable ID, boarding information, required medication, assistive items and permitted spare batteries in an accessible cabin bag; keep any medication in its required packaging and check TSA instructions for special screening. Put only items permitted by both the relevant FAA baggage rules and the airline into checked baggage. Compare each packed bag with the operating carrier's current dimensions, weight and piece allowance, and leave room for screening access to electronics or food if TSA asks. Mark items you still need to verify rather than guessing. The generator stores the packing choices you enter but does not inspect a product, calculate a bag's real measurements or determine whether an item is authorized.

  5. 05

Monitor the flight and save the airline's disruption route

Before leaving for the airport and again while traveling, check the operating airline's official app or website for schedule, terminal, gate and baggage updates. Keep the booking reference, carrier contact route and essential items with you. If a cancellation or significant change occurs, save the notice and ask the airline what alternatives are available. The U.S. Department of Transportation's cancellation and delay dashboard summarizes commitments by major U.S. airlines for controllable disruptions; read the current carrier entry because promised amenities differ. DOT also explains that a ticketed passenger may receive a prompt refund after a cancellation or significant change if they reject the alternative offered. Review current DOT and airline terms for your situation, document contacts and receipts, and use the official complaint route if an unresolved consumer issue remains.
