Travel · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Prepare for a U.S. domestic airport security checkpoint
Use this checklist before a U.S. domestic flight to check adult identification, review uncertain items against TSA's current item list, plan how to present medically necessary supplies, and pack spare lithium batteries safely. It covers preparation only: TSA officers make the final checkpoint decisions, and airlines set their own baggage rules.
MISSION Help an adult passenger prepare identification, carry-on items, medication and spare batteries for a U.S. domestic airport security checkpoint.

Confirm an acceptable adult ID; check each uncertain item in TSA's live carry-on/checked list; prepare medication and accessibility items for separate screening when needed; pack spare lithium batteries in the cabin and within FAA limits; then confirm the operating airline's bag allowance and organize the bag for screening.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm the adult traveler's ID
For each traveler age 18 or older, check TSA's current acceptable-ID list before leaving. A state driver's license or ID used at an airport checkpoint must be REAL ID-compliant; since May 7, 2025, a noncompliant state credential is not an accepted ID for this purpose. TSA's list can change, and a temporary driver's license is not accepted. If you do not have an ID on the list, contact TSA before travel to ask about its identity-verification process; additional screening may apply and travel is not guaranteed if TSA cannot verify identity. This workflow is for U.S. domestic air travel and does not determine entry documents for international trips.
- 02
Check uncertain items against TSA's current list
Make a short inventory of items you are unsure about and search each one in TSA's official What Can I Bring list. Read the carry-on and checked-bag columns and any special instructions for the exact item; do not infer permission from a similar item. If an item is missing or its entry is unclear, ask AskTSA before packing. An item marked as generally permitted can still receive additional screening or be refused based on the circumstances, and the TSA officer at the checkpoint makes the final decision.

Prepare medication and medically necessary supplies
Keep essential medication and supplies accessible, and review the TSA entry for the specific item. TSA permits medically necessary liquids, gels and aerosols in reasonable quantities above 3.4 oz/100 ml, but asks travelers to declare them to the officer for inspection; be ready to remove them for separate screening. TSA recommends, but does not require, medication labels. For a disability, medical condition or screening concern, contact TSA Cares ahead of time. Airline carriage rules can also apply to medical equipment, so confirm arrangements with the operating carrier where needed.
- 04
Pack power banks and spare lithium batteries in the cabin
Put spare lithium batteries and power banks in carry-on baggage only, and protect their terminals from contact with metal. FAA's usual limit is up to 100 Wh per lithium-ion battery; batteries over 100 Wh through 160 Wh require airline approval and are limited to two spare batteries per person. Airlines may set stricter limits, so check yours. If your carry-on is gate-checked or taken at planeside, remove spare batteries and power banks and keep them with you in the cabin. Do not pack a damaged or recalled battery that could create sparks or dangerous heat unless it has been removed or otherwise made safe under FAA guidance.
- 05
Check the airline's bag rules and organize for screening
Use the operating airline's current baggage page or booking details to confirm carry-on size, item count and any stricter battery limits; FAA guidance also directs passengers to check airline rules. Start with an empty bag, separate items TSA may need to inspect, and keep medication and spare batteries reachable in case a bag must be checked at the gate. At the airport, follow the current checkpoint signs and officer instructions. Recheck TSA and airline guidance close to departure because lists and carrier rules can change. No Nirmion tool is linked: the available packing-list utility can record belongings, but it cannot determine TSA permission or airline acceptance.
