Ecommerce · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Prepare Etsy listing photos for clear shopper previews
Etsy listing photos need to show the actual item clearly in both the listing and its cropped thumbnails. This workflow uses Etsy's current seller guidance for recommended dimensions, file behavior, thumbnail adjustment, image order, and alt text. Nirmion's Image Resizer (tool 97) can resize a working copy proportionally; it does not crop, add alt text, repair image rights, or confirm that a listing meets Etsy policy. Treat Etsy's recommendations as guidance, check the seller interface before publishing, and compare each export with the real item and variant.
MISSION Prepare an accurate, high-quality Etsy listing photo set by checking current seller guidance, sizing and cropping working copies, adding useful text alternatives, and verifying how the photos appear in listing previews.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm the listing item, variants, and image rights
Record the listing ID, exact item or digital product, variant, included pieces, material or finish, and who approved the photo set. Use original photographs or assets for which the shop has permission; a publicly visible image is not automatically licensed for reuse. Make a short shot list that answers buyer questions, such as the full item, scale, important details, included parts, and differences between variants. Compare every proposed image with the item being sold, and flag mockups or illustrative images so the listing does not imply that a depiction is the physical item. Keep the unedited source files in a protected folder and create separate working copies for Etsy exports. Do not add badges, props, or text that imply an unsupported feature, quantity, material, or result. (Sources 1, 2)
- 02
Check Etsy's current size, file, and display guidance
Before resizing, open Etsy's Requirements and Best Practices for Images page and the listing editor because platform details can change. Etsy currently recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and high; it says the first photo should be at least 635 pixels in both dimensions to avoid appearing lower in search. The page also says uploads above 1 MB may not finish, especially on a slow connection, so treat that as a troubleshooting risk rather than a guaranteed maximum file size. Check supported formats and note that animated GIFs and transparent PNGs are not supported as expected; transparent areas can render black. Etsy recommends a horizontal or landscape first photo and consistent shapes across the set. Record the requirements for this listing before making exports. (Sources 1, 2)
- 03
Make proportional working copies and deliberate crops
Preserve the original and resize only copies. Use Nirmion Image Resizer (tool 97) when a raster copy needs different pixel dimensions; choose proportional sizing so the item is not stretched. If the desired aspect ratio differs, make a deliberate crop in an image editor before resizing, leaving enough negative space for Etsy's square, portrait, and landscape thumbnail views. Keep the subject centered and the whole item or important detail visible. Do not enlarge a small file expecting new detail; Etsy warns that upscaling may cause pixelation. If the file has a color mismatch, convert the working copy to sRGB in an appropriate editor, since resizing alone does not change color profile. Save a new export and record its dimensions and file size. (Sources 1, 2)
- 04
Review the images and write useful text alternatives
Open each export at normal display size and compare it with the source and the actual product. Check sharpness, orientation, color, crop, fine details, included pieces, and whether image compression or a transparent background changed what buyers see. Select a clear, well-lit main image that depicts the finished item by itself; Etsy's search-visibility guidance identifies a singular primary product image rather than a collage as a quality recommendation, not a ranking guarantee. Write concise alt text for each image that describes the item and details a buyer would miss if the image were unavailable; Etsy's guide recommends a maximum of 250 characters. Avoid keyword lists, duplicated captions, and claims the photo cannot substantiate. Ask a second reviewer to compare the photo sequence with the item facts and variant labels. (Sources 3, 4, 5)
- 05
Upload, order, and adjust the listing thumbnails
In Etsy Shop Manager, open the draft listing and upload the approved copies to its Photos section. Reorder them so the first image is the clearest accurate view of the item, followed by images that answer remaining questions without suggesting unlisted parts or variants. Use Etsy's thumbnail adjustment control to preview the primary photo in the different crops Etsy uses; keep the subject clear in each view and adjust the crop when a key part is cut off. Add the matching alt text in the listing photo controls. Etsy currently allows up to 20 photos and 2 short videos per listing; this guide covers the photo set, so do not treat the image resizer as a video tool. If a file fails to upload, inspect its format and size and retry with an appropriate export rather than silently substituting a lower-quality or inaccurate image. (Sources 2, 3, 4)
- 06
Verify the published shopper view and preserve the approved set
Preview the listing as a shopper on desktop and mobile. Confirm the first image, thumbnail crops, order, variant-specific photos, color, detail, alt text, and match to the actual item. Check that no broken or sideways image remains and that each file is attached to the intended listing. Keep the untouched originals, approved exports, dimensions, listing ID, and review date so the shop can replace or update a set without losing provenance. If an image is rejected or does not display as expected, consult Etsy's live help guidance and correct the file before relying on the listing. Etsy search placement depends on many factors; this workflow follows image guidance but does not guarantee ranking, sales, image protection, or policy approval. (Sources 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
