Prepare and erase an iPhone before sale

Follow this Apple-specific process before selling, trading in, or giving away an iPhone. Make and check a backup, transfer the information and phone service you need, then use Apple's own sign-out and erase controls. Erasing the phone does not delete the copy already stored in iCloud. Menu labels differ by iOS version, and an iPhone that is managed by an employer or organization may require its administrator to release it; use the current Apple instructions and organizational process for those cases. Never give a buyer your Apple Account password, device passcode, verification code, or backup encryption password.

MISSION Help an iPhone owner protect a backup, transfer their data and service, sign out of Apple services, erase the old phone, and confirm it is ready for a new owner without leaving Activation Lock attached.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Back up the iPhone and verify the important content on the replacement device; finish any repair or account/service transfer that must happen before sale; unpair Apple Watch and sign out of Apple Account using the current version-specific steps; erase all content and settings and handle the eSIM/physical SIM; finally confirm the Hello/setup state, that the device is no longer Activation Locked to you, and that the old iPhone is removed from trusted-device lists.

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Protect a backup and confirm the replacement is ready

Before changing the old phone, make a current iCloud or encrypted-computer backup using Apple's official instructions. For an iCloud backup, check the last-backup date and time after the process finishes; on Windows or macOS, use Apple Devices, Finder, or the currently supported iTunes flow and wait for its completion status. If health or activity information is important, Apple's Windows backup instructions say an encrypted local backup is needed for that data; protect its backup password separately. Transfer to the replacement iPhone with Quick Start or restore from the backup, then check that essential photos, contacts, messages, authenticator access, and the phone number work on the new device. Add a trusted number to the Apple Account first if your number is changing. Do not erase the old phone while a backup or transfer is incomplete.

  2. 02

Resolve repair, watch, coverage, and carrier details

If the iPhone is a trade-in, open Settings and review Parts and Service History; Apple says a part marked Finish Repair must be handled before a trade-in. If an Apple Watch is paired to this iPhone, unpair it using Apple's steps so its backup and pairing are handled before the phone is erased. Decide whether an AppleCare plan should be cancelled or transferred, using Apple's current terms. If the iPhone uses an eSIM, confirm the replacement phone has working service or agree on the carrier's transfer process before erasing the old eSIM; if keeping the same number, verify it can receive calls and important sign-in codes on the new phone. Keep carrier account numbers, QR codes and transfer PINs private.

  3. 03

Sign out and unlink Apple messaging where needed

On the old iPhone, use the current Apple Support instructions for its installed iOS version. On recent iOS versions, open Settings, tap your name, scroll to Sign Out, then follow the prompt; older versions can show different sign-out steps. Do not choose a sign-out-only option that leaves data on the phone when the goal is a sale. If switching to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage through Apple's official flow so messages are not still routed to the old number. Do not manually delete synced photos, contacts, documents, or calendars one by one while signed in to iCloud; Apple warns that manual deletion can also remove the item from iCloud and connected devices. If a managed-device profile or Activation Lock blocks sign-out, stop and ask the organization or Apple for the authorized release route instead of trying to bypass it.

  4. 04

Erase the iPhone and handle its SIM profile

After the backup and transfer are verified, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings, then confirm using the prompts on the device. Apple describes this as erasing personal information, content, and settings and returning the iPhone to factory settings; it does not delete the source data in iCloud. When asked about an eSIM, follow Apple's sale guidance and choose to erase the device and eSIM profile if that cellular plan should not pass to the buyer; carrier reactivation may be required on the new phone. Remove a physical SIM card and personal case or accessories you are keeping. If the erase flow asks for an Apple Account password and you do not have it, do not hand the phone over as ready; use Apple's account recovery or support process.

  5. 05

Check setup, Activation Lock, and handoff status

After the erase completes, let the iPhone reach the Hello/setup screen. Confirm no personal account content appears and the device is not asking the new owner for your Apple Account credentials or showing that it is still locked to your account. Apple says erasing with Find My enabled turns off Find My and Activation Lock; if that did not happen, keep the phone and follow Apple's official removal guidance before sale. Remove the erased phone from your trusted-device list, handle the physical SIM, and give the buyer only the device and agreed accessories. If you no longer have the phone, use Apple's separate Find Devices instructions; removing it remotely or changing a password is not the same as confirming that local data was erased. Record the handoff date and any unresolved repair, carrier, or activation restriction without recording secrets.
