Prepare an Indian Passport Photo When Your Application Requires One

An Indian ordinary-passport application does not always require you to bring a photograph: Passport Seva says photos are generally captured at PSK/POPSK, while its current instructions identify exceptions such as children below four and some DPC/SPC/CSC submission routes. Confirm the requirement for your exact service and appointment before making a photo. This workflow helps prepare a genuine, recent photograph when one is required; it cannot make an ineligible image acceptable or replace Passport Seva's current instructions. Passport Photo Maker can help frame and size an existing photo, but it must not change the person's identity or facial features.

MISSION Prepare a recent Indian passport photo to the verified format only when the applicant's specific passport route requires a physical photograph.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Identify the passport service, applicant age, and submission centre; verify whether a photo is needed and which current specifications apply; capture a recent genuine image against the required background; use a photo tool only for permitted crop and layout; inspect and print through a photo lab if the route requires a physical photograph; take it only to the appointment that requests it and keep the image private.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Identify the passport service and submission route

Record whether this is an ordinary fresh passport or reissue, the applicant's age, and the place where the application will be submitted. Do not assume every Indian passport application needs a photo supplied by the applicant: Passport Seva's instructions say photographs are generally captured at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), but its current service guidance tells applicants under four to carry a recent passport-size photograph and identifies specific submission routes where printed photos are needed. Diplomatic/official passports and other special cases may have different instructions and are outside this workflow. Start from the official Passport Seva service page and follow the instructions shown for the actual service and appointment.

  2. 02

Confirm the current photo requirement before taking one

Check the live Passport Seva application and appointment guidance for the applicant's service, age, and centre. If the route captures the applicant's image at PSK/POPSK and gives no exception, do not prepare or upload an extra image. If the applicant is below four or the application is submitted through a DPC, SPC, CSC, or another route that requires a photograph, read the current instructions for that exact route. The Passport Seva booklet gives 4.5 cm by 3.5 cm, colour, and a plain white background for specified printed-photo cases; treat those dimensions as conditional instructions, not a universal rule for every passport route or digital upload.

  3. 03

Capture a recent, clear, genuine photograph

Take a new colour photograph that shows the applicant's current appearance and full face, with a plain white background, even lighting, a centered head, open eyes, and a natural expression when those are the route's stated requirements. Keep hair, glare, shadows, clothing, and any permitted head covering within the current booklet's directions; do not use a group-photo crop, a computer print in a route that prohibits it, or an old image that no longer represents the applicant. Preserve the original camera file. The photographer may adjust exposure or framing only to make the image clear, not to change facial geometry, skin marks, age, or identity.

    Evidence:
  4. 04

Crop and size only if the route calls for a photo

When a physical photo is required and the current instructions specify dimensions, Passport Photo Maker can help position and size the genuine image for that specification. Review the output against the source and confirm the entire face remains visible, the background is appropriate, and no feature has been retouched or obscured. The tool does not query Passport Seva, decide whether the route needs a photograph, certify likeness, guarantee acceptance, or print on photo paper. Because a face image is sensitive, check the tool's current privacy and processing terms before using it; if you prefer not to process the image online, ask a trusted offline photo lab to follow the official specification.

  5. 05

Print through the route's accepted process

If the application instructions require a physical photograph, have it printed on the accepted photo paper and in the required size and quality; do not assume an office or home computer print is acceptable where the official booklet says otherwise. Inspect the physical print for sharp focus, continuous-tone quality, clean white background, correct dimensions, tears or creases, and an unobstructed face. Do not sign, stamp, staple, or paste it unless the current form or route expressly directs you to do so. Keep the image separate from the application until the official instructions say where to affix or hand it over.

    Evidence:
  6. 06

Bring or submit it only where the official route asks

Before the appointment, re-open the current Passport Seva service instructions and confirm whether this applicant must carry the physical photograph, how many copies are required, and whether the application form needs one affixed. The ordinary-passport application page specifically calls for a recent 4.5 cm by 3.5 cm white-background photograph for applicants below four; the booklet also sets out route-specific printed-photo rules. Follow the appointment notice if it gives a more specific direction. If the photo is not required, do not upload it to an unrelated form or send it to an unofficial agent. For a mismatch or changed appointment route, contact Passport Seva through the official portal before printing or visiting.

  7. 07

Protect the image and keep the final version identifiable

Label the file or envelope with a private applicant reference and the date, not unnecessary passport or identity numbers, and keep it separate from other family members' photos. Store the original and final print in a controlled place; share the image only with the authorized photographer, applicant/guardian, or official route that requests it. After the appointment, dispose of extra copies and temporary edits securely when they are no longer needed. If an image is rejected or the applicant's appearance changes before submission, follow the official objection or resubmission instructions and make a new genuine photo rather than altering the rejected file to imitate an accepted identity image.
