Ecommerce · THE NO-PANIC PLAN

Prepare Amazon U.S. product images for the correct listing slots

Amazon's U.S. product-image rules distinguish the main image from secondary images, and some categories have extra guidance. The main image has strict background, framing, and content requirements; image dimensions, naming, and variant assignment also affect upload. This workflow covers a standard non-apparel U.S. listing and tells sellers to check a category-specific guide when one applies. Marketplace Listing Checklist (Nirmion tool 590) helps organize the product and slot review; Image Resizer (tool 97) resizes a working copy. Neither tool decides Amazon eligibility, edits a background, writes image metadata, uploads assets, or guarantees display.

MISSION Prepare accurate Amazon U.S. product images for their correct main, secondary, and variant slots by checking current category rules, making verified working copies, naming and uploading the assets, and reviewing listing errors.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Identify the Amazon U.S. listing, category, ASIN/SKU, and image slot; review the live U.S. image and category guidance; verify ownership and product accuracy; prepare a working copy without distorting or inventing detail; check the exact file dimensions, profile, and variant name; upload through Seller Central and assign the correct product and slot; then inspect the listing and resolve any image issue or suppression notice.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Identify the U.S. product, category, and image slot

Record the Amazon U.S. marketplace, product identifier (ASIN, SKU, or another accepted product ID), exact color/style variant, category, and intended image slot: MAIN, a secondary view, a swatch, or another supported variant. Confirm the image owner and the person who approves product accuracy. Use Nirmion's Marketplace Listing Checklist (tool 590) to organize the product facts, slot, file owner, and review tasks. The checklist only formats information you supply; it cannot query Seller Central or determine whether Amazon will accept the image. Check the live category style guide before editing, because rules can differ for clothing, footwear, multipacks, and other product types. This workflow covers a standard non-apparel U.S. listing. (Sources 1, 2)

  2. 02

Check the current technical rules for that listing

Open Amazon Seller Central's U.S. Product Image Guide and the applicable category instructions before choosing an export. The general guide lists JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and non-animated GIF; JPEG is recommended. It specifies a maximum of 10,000 pixels on the longest side, at least 72 dpi, clear non-pixelated quality, and RGB as preferred. It recommends 1,000 pixels or more on the longest side for zoom. Amazon's image guide and a separate image-error help page describe the 500-pixel minimum on different sides; use the stricter practical check of at least 500 pixels on the shortest side and at least 1,000 on the longest side, then follow the exact Seller Central validation message if it differs. Do not enlarge a small source image to fake detail. (Sources 1, 3)

  3. 03

Select truthful main and secondary images

Use an image the seller owns or has permission to use and compare it with the exact product and included quantity. For a standard U.S. main image, Amazon's guide calls for a realistic product image on a pure white RGB 255,255,255 background, showing the entire product once, occupying about 85% of the frame, and including only items sold with it. Avoid props that imply an included accessory, packaging unless it is a defining feature, text, pricing, watermarks, review graphics, Amazon badges, or logos. Use secondary images to show real angles, included parts, and supported details; do not change color, scale, or features in a way that misleads. If the category style guide gives an exception or tighter rule, follow that guide and ask the category owner to resolve uncertainty before upload. (Sources 1, 4)

  4. 04

Prepare a copy at the needed pixel size

Keep the original image unchanged and make a separate working copy for Amazon. Use Nirmion's Image Resizer (tool 97) only when the copy needs a different pixel dimension; preserve the aspect ratio and never stretch the product. If a crop or background change is required, use an image editor that supports that operation and recheck the result against Amazon's main-image rules. Image Resizer does not crop, make a white background, set file metadata or prove the output is at least 72 dpi. Check the exported file's actual width and height, resolution metadata, color, supported format, and visible sharpness in an image editor; reject an export that looks pixelated, loses detail, or alters the product. Do not upscale a low-resolution source to satisfy a numeric target. (Sources 1, 3, 4)

  5. 05

Name each image for its product and variant

Keep a simple asset manifest with product ID, color or style, slot code, source filename, final filename, and reviewer. For Amazon's legacy bulk naming option, Seller Central gives the pattern product identifier + variant code + file extension, for example `B000123456.MAIN.jpg`; additional supported codes distinguish views such as PT01 or LEFT. If using the flexible upload flow, use clear filenames and assign each image to the correct ASIN or SKU and slot in Seller Central. Upload one verified set per color or style variation. If an image contains entirely AI-generated photorealistic people, review Amazon's current U.S. requirement and add its required `contains-synthetic-performer` keyword to the dc:subject XMP field with a suitable IPTC metadata editor; Nirmion's image tools do not add this metadata. (Sources 1, 2)

  6. 06

Upload the assets to the correct U.S. listing

In Seller Central, open the image upload or Image Manager flow and select the exact ASIN/SKU and color or style variant before assigning files. If using legacy bulk naming, validate every identifier, variant code, and extension before upload; if using flexible naming, manually assign each image after upload. Confirm the country or region assignment is U.S. when the image set should be U.S.-specific. Review the upload result and compare the displayed slot labels with the asset manifest rather than assuming the filename alone assigned the intended view. Amazon's guide says that an upload does not guarantee the image will appear on the product detail page, because it can select and arrange images from multiple sellers. Keep the source and final copy with the listing record so a rejected image can be corrected without recreating the asset. (Sources 1, 2)

  7. 07

Inspect the product page and resolve image issues

After processing, inspect the product detail page and search thumbnail for the right variant, crop, background, order, clarity, and match to the item sold. Amazon says a selected image can take up to 24 hours to appear; a delayed display alone does not prove an upload failed. If Seller Central shows a rejection, missing main image, or suppression notice, read the exact error and use Amazon's image troubleshooting guidance to correct the relevant format, size, color, product ID, or variant issue. Replace the affected asset, review the updated listing, and record the date and reason. Keep the U.S. scope visible in the work record because other Amazon marketplaces and category guides may differ. Following these steps reduces avoidable mistakes but does not guarantee approval, search display, placement, or sales. (Sources 1, 2, 3)
