Prepare and upload a YouTube video or Short thumbnail
This workflow covers custom thumbnails for standard YouTube videos and Shorts. It combines YouTube's current format requirements and upload path with practical checks for accuracy, rights, small-screen readability and post-save verification. Podcast-playlist thumbnails and thumbnail creation with generative tools are outside this guide.
MISSION Prepare an accurate, rights-cleared thumbnail for a standard YouTube video or Short, crop it to the correct ratio, upload it in YouTube Studio, and verify the displayed version or eligible test result.
Start with the video format and channel eligibilityTHE REAL-WORLD BIT
What happens outside this browser tab?
Choose a video/Short format and confirm custom-thumbnail eligibility; design an accurate, simple image from assets you may publish; crop to the correct aspect ratio with sufficient source detail; check file type, resolution, file size, legibility and policy; upload in YouTube Studio and verify the saved image, optionally testing eligible long-form variants with YouTube's native tool.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Choose the format and check channel eligibility
Decide whether the asset is for a standard video or a Short and where viewers will see it. Sign in to the channel owner's YouTube Studio and check Feature eligibility before designing around a custom image: YouTube currently requires a verified account for custom video/Short thumbnails. Custom Short-thumbnail uploads are currently handled in YouTube Studio on a computer. If the custom-thumbnail option is unavailable, resolve the channel's eligibility using YouTube's own instructions or use an available suggested frame; do not send identity documents to an unrelated image tool.
- 02
Design one clear, accurate promise for the video
Review the actual video and its title, then choose a single recognizable subject, action or result the image can honestly preview. Aim at the intended viewer, use a simple composition, place any text large enough to read on a phone, and keep the image/title complementary rather than repeating the same words. Use only footage, photos, faces, logos and fonts you are allowed to publish. Remove misleading claims, private details and visual elements that conflict with YouTube's Community Guidelines. Keep an untouched copy of the approved source asset.

Crop the authorized image to the right ratio and resolution
Prepare a 16:9 image for a standard video or a 9:16 image for a Short. YouTube currently recommends 3840 x 2160 for videos and 2160 x 3840 for Shorts, with minimum width/height 640 pixels respectively; use a source with enough detail for the selected output instead of enlarging a small screenshot and assuming the quality is restored. Crop around the key subject and check safe margins for text and faces. Nirmion Image Cropper ID 98 can make an exact-ratio crop with an adjustable focal point in your browser; it does not design the thumbnail, judge quality, or check YouTube policy. Use an authorized image only.
- 04
Inspect the export at small size and against current limits
Open the exported JPG or PNG at phone-preview size and verify the subject, text and title are still clear, nothing important is cropped, and the image faithfully represents the video. Check file size against the upload device's current limit: YouTube's help currently lists 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB for video thumbnails uploaded from mobile. Follow any stricter live Studio message and re-export with an appropriate quality setting if rejected. For a vertical video, do not submit a 16:9 image expecting the same thumbnail to appear everywhere: YouTube says vertical videos with a 16:9 custom thumbnail may show an auto-generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore and subscription pages.
- 05
Upload, save and verify the displayed thumbnail
On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio. For a standard video choose Content, open the video, choose Upload file under Thumbnail and Save. For a Short choose Content > Shorts, open it, upload the 9:16 file under Thumbnail and Save. Reopen the item after saving to confirm the selected image; YouTube notes changes may take time to appear. For an eligible public long-form video, you may optionally use YouTube's native A/B testing for up to three variants if Advanced features are enabled; it is not available for Shorts, private videos, made-for-kids or mature-audience videos. Read the result in Studio: YouTube selects based on watch-time share, not click-through rate alone, and tests can take days or up to two weeks. If the feature is unavailable or no variant wins, keep the accurate version you selected and record the observed result rather than promising a performance lift.
