Vehicles · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Prepare and complete a California private-party car sale
Use this seller-focused workflow for a normal private sale of a car registered in California. It does not cover a dealer sale, interstate transfer, lien payoff, lease, inherited or jointly owned vehicle, salvage/branded title, or a buyer's title application. Pause and get instructions from California DMV, the lienholder, or a qualified professional if any of those conditions apply.
MISSION Help a California registered owner prepare an ordinary in-state private-party passenger-car sale, document the handoff, and report it to DMV on time.

Confirm the California title and transaction are straightforward; prepare the signed title and applicable smog and odometer records; protect yourself from fake-check overpayment; complete the handoff and remove personal data; then file the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability within five calendar days and retain confirmation.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm this is a standard California sale
Check the California title against your identification and the vehicle: confirm the registered owner or owners, VIN, title status and any lienholder. Agree who is authorized to sign and resolve any mismatch before advertising a final handoff. This workflow assumes one ordinary private-party sale of a California-registered passenger car to a new owner in California. If the title is missing, a lien remains, names/signatures do not match, or the vehicle is leased, inherited, jointly owned, branded, or going out of state, stop and use DMV's specific title-transfer route or ask the lienholder/DMV what must happen first. Do not promise a clear title or a completion date until the authority and paperwork are settled.
- 02
Prepare the title and sale documents
Use the current California title-transfer instructions to identify the seller signatures and disclosures for this vehicle. Record the actual sale date, agreed price, buyer and seller details, VIN and odometer reading; complete the mileage disclosure on the title or required DMV form when applicable, without guessing or altering a reading. A signed bill of sale can document the parties' copy of the transaction; use DMV REG 135 if useful, and keep a copy. Check the vehicle's actual Smog Check requirements before sale: BAR says a smog check is normally required for a change of ownership, with specific exceptions including certain newer model-year vehicles and other categories. If one is required, arrange it before sale and give the buyer the inspection report. Confirm the current requirements for this vehicle with DMV/BAR rather than assuming every car is treated alike. Do not sign a blank or incomplete title; if an entry or required disclosure is unclear, pause and ask DMV.
- 03
Agree on a safe payment and handoff
Write down the agreed price, what is included, the payment method and the exact handoff conditions. Do not accept a check for more than the price and never send an alleged overpayment back, even if the deposited funds appear in your account: FTC warns that a fake check may take weeks to be identified and reversed. Do not treat a screenshot, email, or an available balance as proof that a payment is final; independently check with your financial institution using a known contact channel and follow its settlement guidance. If the buyer proposes an online escrow or payment service, verify the service and transaction directly before relying on it. If the payment cannot be verified or the buyer pressures you to return money, stop the transaction and do not hand over the vehicle or endorsed title.
- 04
Complete the handoff and remove your connected data
At the actual exchange, confirm the payment and buyer details, complete the title and applicable odometer disclosure accurately, give the buyer the completed documents and retain copies of the signed paperwork and sale record. Record the date and odometer reading at handoff. Before giving over keys or devices, remove personal items and clear contacts, addresses, navigation history, garage codes, app logins and paired phones from the vehicle's system. Unlink the manufacturer account and transfer or cancel connected subscriptions. A factory reset may not cancel subscriptions or disconnect every account; consult the owner's manual or manufacturer if the controls are unclear. Do not put personal identifiers or copies of private identity documents in a public listing or workflow record.
- 05
File the California NRL and save proof
Within five calendar days after the sale/transfer and delivery of the vehicle, submit the California DMV Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) online or by REG 138. Have the buyer's name and address, license plate, last five VIN digits, sale date and odometer reading ready; make sure the vehicle and party details are accurate and legible. Save the online confirmation or a copy/ mailing proof for your records. If the online filing reports a plate/VIN mismatch, recheck the information; if it is correct and still does not match, contact DMV. An NRL is the seller's notice and does not itself transfer ownership or remove the seller's name from the vehicle record'the buyer must complete the separate title transfer. Completion for this seller workflow means retaining the signed transaction record and evidence that DMV received the NRL, not assuming the buyer finished their transfer.
