Video & Media · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Prepare a customer testimonial video clip for publication
Use this process when a business plans to edit a real customer's recorded comments into an advertising or public testimonial clip. Obtain permission for the intended edit and channels, keep the source recording, and have the advertising or legal owner review claims and disclosures. A clip or captioning tool cannot establish consent, prove a claim, or guarantee compliance with every platform or jurisdiction rule.
MISSION Prepare an authorized customer testimonial clip that preserves the speaker's meaning, supports its factual claims, discloses relevant relationships, and is captioned and approved for the intended channel.

What happens outside this browser tab?
Confirm the speaker's authorization, permitted edits and distribution channels; verify the speaker's actual experience and any payment, gift, employee or other material connection; select a complete statement with enough context to preserve meaning; trim a separate derivative copy without altering the speaker's words; prepare accurate synchronized captions and visible disclosures; check every factual or typical-results implication against evidence; then obtain final customer and internal approval, preview the published-size version and keep a dated record of the approved source and clip.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm permission, intended use, and the source recording
Record who made the recording, the customer's identity and authorized contact, the date, the original file location, and the planned channels, audience, time period and edits. Obtain documented permission for the actual commercial use, including whether the business may trim, caption, resize, translate, or reuse the clip in paid media; have the responsible owner confirm the scope and any release requirements. Keep the original unedited recording and do not use a clip if the person, recording rights, or permission cannot be verified. Remove unrelated people, confidential screens, and customer information before any public export.
- 02
Verify the customer's experience and any material relationship
Confirm that the speaker actually used the product or service and that the recorded experience is their own. Record whether the customer received payment, a free product, a discount, employment, a family relationship, or another connection that could affect how viewers evaluate the endorsement. Do not ask for a positive review as a condition of a benefit, create a fictional speaker, or pass off an employee or paid actor as an independent customer. FTC guidance treats fake or misrepresented testimonials as a serious concern and explains that relevant material connections may need clear disclosure; have the advertising reviewer confirm the exact case.
- 03
Choose a segment that keeps the statement in context
Write down the proposed in and out timecodes and the exact claim conveyed by the selected segment. Review the sentences before and after the cut so a qualifier, uncertainty, comparison, limitation, or answer to a question is not removed in a way that changes what the customer meant. Preserve the speaker's wording, tone, sequence and identity; do not splice separate answers to suggest a single continuous statement or add reaction footage that changes its meaning. If the clip cannot stand on its own without misleading context, select a different segment or use the full answer.
- 04
Trim a separate copy and preserve edit provenance
Work from a duplicate of the original recording and use Video Trimmer to keep one continuous interval with explicit start and end times. Do not overwrite the source or represent a synthetic or reconstructed voice as the customer. Record the source filename, selected timecodes, editor, export date, output filename and any other changes such as crop, blur or audio cleanup. Watch the exported file from beginning to end to confirm the cut is clean and the spoken words still match the approved transcript. Escalate any edit that could change the product claim or speaker's intent for a fresh review.
- 05
Add accurate captions and a disclosure viewers can notice
Create synchronized captions that include the spoken words, identify speakers where needed, and represent meaningful sounds. Review the captions against the final edited clip because automatic speech recognition can mishear names, numbers, product features and qualifications. Use Caption File Checker to validate supported caption-file structure; then preview it in the target player and confirm text remains readable and does not cover important visuals. Add any required material-connection disclosure in a clear, conspicuous form within the video or accompanying presentation appropriate to the channel; do not assume a buried description or a caption file alone will make a disclosure noticeable.
- 06
Substantiate every implied performance or typical-results claim
Review what the clip communicates together with the title, thumbnail, on-screen text, caption, surrounding copy and call to action. If viewers could understand a specific result, performance level, savings amount, or typical outcome, ask the claim owner for evidence that supports that exact impression and audience. A customer's statement is not by itself proof that most customers will achieve the same result. FTC endorsement guidance warns that a testimonial can imply representative results and that a simple 'results not typical' label may not cure an unsupported impression. If evidence is missing, narrow the claim, add a supported disclosure, or do not publish the clip.
- 07
Approve the final export and retain a reviewable record
Have the customer or authorized representative confirm that the final edit accurately reflects the approved statement and permitted use; have the advertising reviewer sign off on factual claims and disclosures, and the accessibility reviewer check captions and playback. Preview the exact aspect ratio and size for each planned channel, including audio, captions, on-screen disclosure, link and thumbnail. Keep the release version, original source, permission, claim substantiation, disclosure rationale, caption file, reviewers, publication date and removal or refresh trigger together. If the source, offer, customer relationship, claim evidence, or platform presentation changes, repeat the affected review before reuse.
