Plan a U.S. interstate household move with a registered mover

For a U.S. household moving from one state to another with a professional mover. FMCSA rules for interstate household-goods movers differ from intrastate moves, where state and local requirements apply. This guide helps organize the federal interstate process; confirm your actual contract and dates with the mover.

MISSION Plan a household-goods move across U.S. state lines by checking mover authority, comparing written estimates, preparing an accurate inventory and move paperwork, updating key addresses, and verifying delivery.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

Confirm the move is interstate, check the mover in FMCSA records, compare written estimates, prepare the shipment inventory and address updates, review the Bill of Lading before signing, then check the delivered shipment and keep any claim records.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Confirm the move scope and key dates

Record the origin, destination, access details, move dates and who is responsible for each address. If the shipment crosses state lines, use FMCSA?s interstate-mover guidance; for a move entirely within one state, check that state?s rules instead. Make a dated list of pickup, delivery, lease or closing, utility and mail-forwarding tasks, and keep your new address private outside the providers that need it.

  2. 02

    Check and compare interstate movers

Get written estimates from several movers based on an in-person inspection of the household goods. Use FMCSA?s Mover Search to confirm the company is authorized for interstate household-goods moves and review its complaint history. Compare the services, pickup/delivery windows, estimate type and payment terms, not just the lowest price. Ask each mover to explain unclear charges or services before you choose.

  3. 03

Prepare the shipment inventory and read the rights booklet

Make a room-by-room list of the items the mover will transport and record existing damage on the mover?s inventory when the shipment is inspected. Review FMCSA?s ?Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move? booklet, which interstate movers must provide; use it to understand estimate types, mover liability and claim paperwork. Keep valuables, medicines and essential documents with you if you do not want them included in the shipment.

  4. 04

Review the contract and update important addresses

Before loading, read the Order for Service and Bill of Lading; confirm the mover, services, pickup/delivery dates, payment terms and shipment inventory are correct. Do not sign a document with blank or disputed terms; keep a copy of every signed page. Use Nirmion?s Address Change Checklist to organize government and provider updates, and submit the USPS forwarding request only through the official USPS channel linked by USAGov. The checklist does not file changes for you.

  5. 05

Check delivery and preserve any claim evidence

At delivery, compare the shipment with the inventory, inspect items as they are unloaded and make accurate notes about missing or visibly damaged goods before signing the inventory. Keep the Bill of Lading, estimate, inventory, receipts and any photos. If something is missing, damaged or delayed, follow the claim instructions in the FMCSA booklet and contact the mover in writing; confirm the deadline and required form from the actual contract and current federal guidance.
