Open an NRE bank account as an Indian non-resident

This workflow is for an Indian citizen resident outside India who wants an Indian Non-Resident External (NRE) rupee account. The Reserve Bank of India describes NRE, NRO and FCNR(B) accounts as different options with different currency and funds-handling rules. An NRE account is not a universal substitute for an NRO account used for local Indian income or an FCNR(B) term deposit. Exact eligibility, documents, attestation, application channel, account features and tax treatment must be confirmed with the authorized bank for the applicant's circumstances. This guide is not legal or tax advice; never send passport, visa or bank documents to an unofficial agent or Nirmion tool.

MISSION Help an Indian citizen living outside India assess whether an NRE account fits, prepare bank-specific KYC evidence and complete an application through an authorized bank.

Review RBI's current non-resident account FAQ

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Confirm non-resident eligibility and whether NRE matches the purpose and funds, select an authorized bank and review its current NRI instructions, prepare the bank's KYC/tax-residency evidence, submit and authenticate the application through that bank, then verify account classification and update the bank if residency changes.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Confirm eligibility and choose the right account type

Check that your status and purpose fit the bank's NRE-account eligibility rules before collecting forms. RBI's non-resident account FAQ describes NRE accounts for NRIs and persons of Indian origin (including eligible OCI cardholders) and distinguishes them from NRO rupee accounts and FCNR(B) foreign-currency term deposits. NRE accounts are rupee-denominated; the RBI FAQ describes specific permitted credits and debits, while NRO is commonly relevant to legitimate dues arising in India and has different remittance conditions. If you receive rent, pension or other Indian-source income, need a foreign-currency deposit, have a complex nationality or residency situation, or are unsure how funds may be remitted, ask the bank's NRI desk and a qualified tax adviser before selecting an account. Do not infer eligibility from a marketing page alone.

  2. 02

Choose an authorized bank and read its current NRI application route

Select an Indian bank authorized to maintain the account and open the bank's own NRI or account-opening page by entering its known official domain yourself. Compare account type, minimum-balance terms, channels, remittance process, fees, service access and the bank's grievance contact; terms differ among banks and products. Confirm whether that specific bank accepts an online application, a branch appointment, or a signed paper application from abroad, and whether originals, certified copies or third-party attestation are needed. SBI's published NRI materials show one bank-specific example of forms, signatures and overseas-document attestation; those requirements do not automatically apply to another bank. Reject unsolicited account-opening links and verify any representative through the bank's public contact channel.

  3. 03

Prepare identity, status, address and tax-residency evidence

Use the selected bank's current document checklist rather than a generic agent list. It may request passport identity pages, evidence of non-resident status such as a valid visa or work permit, overseas and permanent address evidence, tax-identification information for each tax residence, photographs, signatures and account-specific declarations. Joint applicants may each need their own evidence. If a document is not in a language accepted by the bank, ask which translation and certification it accepts before paying for one. SBI's current application materials illustrate that evidence and attestation can vary by applicant and by whether the person applies in person or from abroad. Send only what the bank's authenticated process requests, retain a private copy and do not email unredacted identity records to an unverified address.

  4. 04

Submit through the bank and complete verification

Complete the current NRE application using the same legal name, passport details, address and tax-residency information shown on the supporting documents. Choose NRE explicitly and review account-holder and joint-operation instructions before signing. Follow the selected bank's prescribed identity verification, signature attestation, document certification, initial-funding and submission steps; an overseas applicant may have different steps from a visitor applying at a branch. Keep the bank's application reference and submit confirmation, but never send an OTP, card PIN, online-banking password or device access to a caller. If the bank rejects a document or requests another verification, confirm the request inside the bank's official case channel and obtain its current instructions rather than editing evidence or using a paid intermediary.

  5. 05

Verify opening and keep residency details current

Wait for the bank's official confirmation and verify the account is classified as NRE, the account-holder names and contact details are correct, and the bank has explained how to fund and operate it. Test account access through the bank's official channel and retain the account terms, fee schedule, application record and tax-residency declarations securely. Ask the bank and a qualified adviser how the account's permitted credits, remittances and tax treatment apply to your own funds; do not assume all Indian income or all transfers qualify. RBI says a resident account should be redesignated when its holder becomes non-resident, and an NRE account should be reviewed for redesignation or another eligible account option when the holder returns to India to stay. Notify the bank promptly when residency or tax-residence details change and follow the bank's current process.
