Open an Indian NRO Account for Income Received in India
An NRO account is an Indian rupee account for bona fide transactions by persons resident outside India, including eligible dues received in India. Its permitted credits, taxation, and remittance treatment differ from an NRE account. This practical guide walks through selecting a bank, preparing bank-specific KYC, applying, funding through an eligible route, and understanding operating limits. It is not legal, tax, or financial advice, and it does not determine your FEMA status or whether a specific payment is eligible. Verify current RBI directions and your bank's live requirements before applying or moving funds. KYC Document Checklist can track generic document labels locally; never enter identity numbers or upload personal documents into it.
MISSION Open an NRO rupee account through a chosen Indian bank after confirming residency, eligible Indian receipts, KYC requirements, account terms, and transaction limits.
Review the RBI FAQ and chosen bank's current NRO application instructions before submitting KYCTHE REAL-WORLD BIT
What happens outside this browser tab?
Confirm NRO suitability and residency; check the selected bank's current documents and application routes; choose the right account form and verify eligible credits; apply through an authenticated bank channel; complete KYC verification; confirm approval and fund only through an eligible route; then set account controls and check the current rules before remittances or status changes.

One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm that an NRO account matches the money and residency situation
Use this workflow when you are a person resident outside India who needs a rupee account for eligible Indian dues such as rent, pension, dividends, interest, or other legitimate receipts in India. RBI describes NRO as one account category for bona fide rupee transactions; it is not the same as an NRE account, whose permitted credits and repatriability differ. Confirm your FEMA residential status with the bank and read its current NRO product terms. This guide covers a standard individual account, not special cases such as foreign tourists, students, restricted nationalities, entities, or a business-purpose SNRR account. If any special category may apply, ask the bank which approval and account route is required before applying.
- 02
List the account holders, purpose, and documents the chosen bank requires
Open the selected bank's current NRO application and KYC instructions before collecting documents; do not treat another bank's checklist as binding. SBI's published guidance, for example, lists passport and residence-visa copies for NRIs and describes attestation routes, while its application procedure offers online, overseas-office, courier, or branch routes in applicable cases. Check the selected bank's exact requirements for identity, overseas and Indian addresses where relevant, visa or OCI details, photographs, tax declarations, signatures, attestation, originals, and joint-holder information. Include a resident joint holder only if the bank permits that relationship and operating mandate. Use KYC Document Checklist to track document labels and status locally; do not enter passport numbers, tax IDs, scans, addresses, or other identity data into the tool.
- 03
Choose the NRO account form and verify credits before applying
Ask the bank which available form fits the intended use: savings, current, recurring, or fixed deposit where offered, and whether the account can be opened singly or jointly under your circumstances. Compare any minimum balance, charges, interest, debit-card, online access, nomination, and tax/TDS terms in the bank's current schedule. Match expected receipts to RBI's permitted-credit categories: inward remittances, legitimate dues in India, transfers from other NRO accounts, and specified resident gifts or loans subject to applicable conditions. Do not route overseas income or investment proceeds into an NRO account just because the payment is in rupees; confirm the permitted account and transaction treatment with the bank. Keep a short purpose note and ask the bank to resolve any unusual source before funding.
- 04
Complete the application through the bank's authenticated channel
Start from the chosen bank's official website or visit a verified branch; avoid links sent by unsolicited callers or agents. Complete the current account opening form for each required holder, select NRO and the correct account form, provide the purpose and requested tax/residency details, and follow that bank's signature, photograph, attestation, and submission directions. SBI describes online and paper application routes, but its steps and document process apply to SBI and may change; another bank may use different channels. Save the application reference number or branch acknowledgement. Never send credentials, PINs, or one-time passwords to a person claiming to process KYC, and contact the bank using a number or address published on its official site if a payment or document request seems unusual.
- 05
Submit only the requested evidence and respond to verification requests
Provide copies through the bank's official upload portal, designated processing centre, verified overseas office, or branch as instructed. If the bank requires an attested copy, confirm who may attest it, whether every page or only specified pages must be certified, whether originals must be inspected, and whether translation or recency rules apply. SBI's KYC page is a useful example of bank-specific passport and visa evidence, not a universal standard. Keep a record of which documents you sent, when, and to which verified channel; use the bank's reference number for follow-up. If the bank requests extra evidence or rejects a document, ask for the precise deficiency and accepted alternatives through its official contact route. Do not submit altered or misleading evidence, and do not share more information than the bank requests.
- 06
Review the account confirmation and first permitted funding
Wait for the bank to confirm approval and provide the account details through its official channel. Verify the account-holder names, account type, branch, operating mandate, nomination status, linked contact details, and applicable terms before using it. Fund only through a route the bank confirms is permitted and retain remittance or source-of-funds records for legitimate Indian receipts. RBI distinguishes NRO credits and debits from NRE transactions; an account opening does not make an otherwise ineligible transfer permissible. If the bank's requested funding source, account classification, or credited transaction does not match your understanding, pause and ask the bank to classify it before proceeding. Do not use any Nirmion calculator or checklist as evidence that a transfer is legally permitted.
- 07
Set operating controls and understand future remittance and status changes
Enable only the online access and notifications you need, set a secure password directly with the bank, and save the official service and fraud-reporting contacts. Ask the bank about local payment limits, resident-relative or power-of-attorney operation, nomination, account statements, tax withholding, and how it handles a change in residential status. RBI says NRO balances are not freely repatriable like NRE funds: current income and other eligible amounts are subject to specific rules, documentation, tax treatment, and limits; ask the bank and consult current RBI directions before planning an outward remittance or NRO-to-NRE transfer. Tell the bank if your residency status changes, since account designation may need to change. Review the RBI FAQ and the bank's live terms again before material transactions because rules and procedures can change.
