Escalate an India credit card complaint

For a credit card issued in India by a bank or NBFC. This guide helps you prepare and track a written complaint to the card issuer, then identify when the RBI Ombudsman route may be available. It does not decide whether a transaction is unauthorized, promise a refund, or submit a complaint on your behalf.

MISSION File a documented complaint with an India-issued credit card issuer and escalate to the RBI Ombudsman when its published conditions are met.

Prepare the complaint

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Record the issue and requested correction, assemble masked account evidence, send a clear complaint through the issuer?s official grievance route, and track its response. If the issuer rejects it, gives an unsatisfactory response, or does not respond within 30 days, use the RBI Ombudsman process described in current RBI guidance.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Define the complaint and confirm scope

Confirm that the complaint concerns an India-issued credit card from a bank or NBFC. Record the issuer, masked card reference (last four digits only), statement period, transaction or charge, amount in question, date noticed, and what correction or explanation you are asking for. Keep suspicions separate from confirmed facts; do not include a full card number, CVV, PIN, OTP, password or unrelated account data.

  2. 02

Collect the evidence the issuer needs

Save the relevant statement page, payment or transaction receipt, prior issuer messages, and any reference numbers. Make a short dated timeline of what happened and when you contacted the issuer. Redact unrelated transactions and sensitive account details from copies. Keep the original statement in private storage and send only the information requested through the issuer?s verified channel.

  3. 03

Write and send the first complaint to the issuer

Use Nirmion?s Consumer Complaint Letter tool to organize the facts, issue, evidence list and specific remedy you want. Review every field and remove secrets before copying the letter. Submit it through the card issuer?s official grievance channel shown on its current statement or official website; the Nirmion tool does not send or file it. Save the sent copy, date, channel and issuer acknowledgment or complaint number.

  4. 04

Check the issuer response against RBI escalation rules

Track the issuer?s acknowledgment and written response date. RBI?s card FAQ says you may approach the RBI Ombudsman if the issuer does not respond within 30 days after the complaint, rejects it wholly or partly, or you are not satisfied with its response or resolution. If the issue is resolved, record the correction and date; if one of those conditions applies, continue to the next step.

  5. 05

Escalate through RBI CMS and track the docket

If an RBI Ombudsman condition is met, follow the current RBI complaint instructions and submit through the RBI Complaint Management System at cms.rbi.org.in. Include the issuer complaint reference, timeline, response or evidence that no response arrived, and only the supporting documents requested. Save the RBI docket number and check status through the official portal. The workflow is complete when the case outcome or next required action is recorded; filing does not guarantee a particular remedy.
