Download and Protect an e-Aadhaar Copy

UIDAI's e-Aadhaar is a password-protected, digitally signed electronic copy of Aadhaar. This guide covers downloading an existing Aadhaar through UIDAI's MyAadhaar portal or official Aadhaar app, choosing a masked copy when that meets your need, opening the PDF, and protecting the file. Online download requires access to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar or a currently supported official authentication method. This is not an Aadhaar enrolment or update process. Aadhaar numbers, OTPs, and downloaded identity files are sensitive; do not enter them into Nirmion tools or share them with intermediaries.

MISSION Download an official e-Aadhaar copy and keep its identity data private.

Open UIDAI's MyAadhaar page and choose Download Aadhaar

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Decide whether you need a full or masked copy; open UIDAI's current MyAadhaar service; choose an offered retrieval identifier; complete UIDAI's OTP or supported authentication; download the digitally signed PDF; open it using UIDAI's published password rule; check the document and signature; and store or share only the minimum necessary through a trusted channel.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Decide whether a full or masked copy fits your purpose

Use this process only when an Aadhaar has already been issued and you need an electronic copy. UIDAI offers a masked Aadhaar option that replaces the first eight digits with Xs and leaves the final four visible. Choose it when the person or service accepting your document permits a masked copy; do not assume every recipient accepts it. If you need enrolment, demographic correction, or a mobile-number update, stop and use UIDAI's separate service. Government Form Checklist (845) may track generic readiness, but keep every identifier and personal value out of it.

  2. 02

Open UIDAI's MyAadhaar download service directly

Start from uidai.gov.in or type UIDAI's MyAadhaar address directly, then choose Download Aadhaar. The current UIDAI My Aadhaar page lists Download Aadhaar as a free service that requires mobile OTP and lists Download Masked Aadhaar separately under security services. Confirm the UIDAI domain before entering anything. Do not use a search advertisement, agent link, messaging attachment, or third-party site that offers to download the file for you; UIDAI's service is the source of the issued copy.

  3. 03

Choose an identifier the portal currently accepts

On UIDAI's download form, choose one of the retrieval methods displayed for your case. UIDAI's current FAQ lists Aadhaar number, Enrollment ID, or VID as ways to request e-Aadhaar. Enter the selected value only in the official UIDAI page, verify the captcha if requested, and check the masked value or reference on screen before continuing. If you no longer know the Aadhaar number or Enrollment ID, use UIDAI's official Retrieve Lost UID/EID service rather than asking a third party to look it up.

  4. 04

Complete the OTP or currently offered UIDAI authentication

Request the one-time code from UIDAI and enter it only in the official MyAadhaar session. UIDAI says the download OTP is sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. Its resident handbook also describes a time-based OTP option through the official app; use that only if UIDAI presents it as an available option for your account today. Never read an OTP to a caller or paste it into a chat. If you cannot access the registered number, stop and use UIDAI's current mobile-update or enrolment-centre process instead of trying an unofficial bypass.

  5. 05

Download the PDF and open it using UIDAI's current rule

Download the PDF to a device you control and open it locally in a trusted PDF reader. UIDAI's published e-Aadhaar instructions say the PDF password combines the first four letters of the name in capitals with the birth year in YYYY format, with shorter-name exceptions shown in UIDAI's examples. Treat the name and birth year used to form the password as sensitive, and do not type them into a public computer or online password tool. If UIDAI changes the document instructions, follow the current official guidance rather than an old example.

  6. 06

Check the PDF contents and its UIDAI digital signature

Confirm the PDF opens, its pages are readable, and its visible demographic details match the copy you intended to retrieve. UIDAI describes e-Aadhaar as digitally signed and provides guidance for validating its digital signature; use a current UIDAI-supported reader or instructions if you need to verify authenticity. Do not edit, flatten, recompress, or re-create the identity PDF as a substitute for the original. If the file is corrupt or details are wrong, download it again from UIDAI or start the appropriate official correction request.

  7. 07

Store the file privately and share only what is required

Keep the PDF in private storage protected by your device lock and a strong account password; remove it from a shared or public computer after use. When a recipient accepts masked Aadhaar, prefer that version to reduce the number of visible digits. Share through the recipient's verified secure channel and avoid public cloud links, group chats, or Nirmion tools. If you lose access to the registered mobile or need help with the service, return to UIDAI's current site and use its official help line or an authorized enrolment centre; never pay an unknown person for a download.
