Banking · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Dispute a credit card transaction with an India issuer
For holders of credit cards issued in India. If the transaction is unauthorised, report it immediately through the issuer?s official 24-hour reporting channel and follow the issuer?s card-blocking instructions. For a merchant, amount or duplicate-billing dispute, use the issuer?s current dispute process and note any stated deadline. The rules and liability depend on the facts; this workflow helps you document and route the complaint, it does not decide liability or recover money.
MISSION Report an unrecognized or incorrect credit-card transaction to an India-issued card?s issuer, preserve the case record, and escalate an unresolved complaint through the correct channel.

Classify the transaction, secure the card if it may be compromised, notify the issuer through verified channels, keep the case number and evidence, and escalate only after checking the issuer?s response and current RBI eligibility.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Classify the transaction and protect the card
Open the statement or issuer app from a known bookmark and record the transaction date, amount, merchant descriptor and card?s last four digits. Decide whether you recognize the purchase but dispute its amount, service or duplication, or do not recognize/authorize it. If it may be unauthorized, contact the issuer immediately using the official app, number on the card or number on a recent statement; ask whether to block or replace the card and how to prevent further charges. Never share a PIN, OTP, password or full card number in an email or with an unsolicited caller.
- 02
Submit the dispute through the issuer?s official route
Use the issuer?s verified app, website, phone channel or written grievance route and follow its current form and deadline for this type of dispute. State only the facts you know: transaction reference, date, amount, why it is disputed, and whether the card or credentials may be compromised. For an unauthorized electronic transaction, notify the bank as early as possible; RBI directions say the bank must provide round-the-clock reporting channels and promptly acknowledge the report with a complaint number.
- 03
Save evidence and track the case
Keep the complaint number, submission date, channel, issuer acknowledgement and a copy of what you sent. Save the relevant statement line, receipts, order or cancellation confirmation, and merchant correspondence in a private location. Redact unrelated transactions, full card details, CVV, PIN and authentication codes before sharing any document. Check the issuer?s stated response date and retain each follow-up.
- 04
Prepare a clear written follow-up if needed
Use Nirmion?s Consumer Complaint Letter tool to arrange the issuer, disputed transaction, timeline, evidence list and specific action you are requesting. Check every fact, remove unnecessary personal or payment data, and copy the draft into the issuer?s verified grievance channel yourself. The tool does not send a complaint, block the card or determine whether a transaction is fraudulent.
- 05
Escalate an unresolved complaint and record the outcome
First use the issuer?s grievance escalation process and keep its final response or proof that you received no response. RBI?s card directions provide an option to approach the RBI Ombudsman if the issuer does not give a satisfactory response within 30 days from lodging the complaint; confirm that the entity, issue and current eligibility rules fit before filing on the official RBI CMS portal. Keep the acknowledgement and outcome. Do not assume a credit, charge reversal or liability decision until the issuer confirms it in writing.
