Create and publish a WordPress.com blog featured image

For a writer or site editor preparing the featured image for one WordPress.com blog post. This is a post-level thumbnail/cover workflow, distinct from a site-wide hero image or a YouTube thumbnail. WordPress.com says themes control where a featured image appears, and some themes crop or show it in multiple places; check your own live post, archive card and social preview instead of relying on one universal size. Use an image you created or can reuse under its actual license. Nirmion Image Resizer and Image Alt Text Decision Tree can help with the crop and text alternative, but cannot grant image rights, know your theme layout, or guarantee search exposure.

MISSION Help a WordPress.com publisher create one licensed, relevant, readable featured image for a specific blog post, size it for the live theme, and verify its accessible public display.

Prepare a blog featured image

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Confirm the post and featured-image slot; choose a rights-cleared visual that represents the article; design it to survive the theme?s crop; resize/compress a copy for the actual display; then set it in WordPress.com, decide its text alternative by purpose, and verify the public post and archive/social previews.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Choose the exact post and featured-image placement

Open the article draft and confirm its title, central idea, intended reader and the destination for the image. Decide whether this file is the WordPress.com featured image used on post cards/search/social previews, an inline article image, or both; this workflow focuses on the featured-image slot. Check whether the post template already displays the featured image so you do not accidentally insert the same visual twice. Record the theme, the visible card and post slots, any configured crop/aspect ratio, and any separately documented social-image rules. WordPress.com notes that the theme determines where a featured image appears and that third-party themes may have their own instructions. There is no single pixel size that fits every WordPress site. (Sources 1, 2)

  2. 02

Pick an accurate, rights-cleared visual for the article

Choose a photo, illustration or graphic that genuinely helps a reader understand or recognize this particular article. Prefer an original asset you made, an image with permission from its creator, or one whose published license clearly allows this use. Save the source URL, creator, license/version and required credit alongside the image; check restrictions on commercial use, adaptations and attribution rather than assuming that a search result means free reuse. Creative Commons licenses differ in their conditions, so if the terms do not fit your site or remain unclear, do not publish that asset. Do not use a misleading stock photo, a logo you are not authorized to use, or an image that implies a person endorsed the article when they did not. Keep the image?s claim consistent with the article and any caption or nearby text. (Sources 3, 4)

  3. 03

Compose the image for its real crop and small-card view

Keep the main subject or idea within a central safe area so theme-driven crops at different widths do not cut it off. Open the image in a preview approximating the archive card, article header and common mobile width; check that the image remains understandable at thumbnail size. Use a high-quality source and avoid tiny text embedded in the artwork; when text is necessary to convey information, provide the same information as real page text. Google recommends images that are relevant to the landing page, placed near related text, and sharp without unnecessarily slowing the page. If the graphic is a chart or contains a detailed process, ensure the underlying information is also available in the article rather than relying on the image alone. Adjust the composition or select another asset if the theme crop removes the subject. (Sources 1, 2, 5)

  4. 04

Resize and optimize a working copy for the theme

Keep the original file untouched, then size a copy using the dimensions and crop you verified for the target theme. Use Nirmion Image Resizer (tool 97) to create the chosen output dimensions; it does not determine the right size for your theme. WordPress.com?s guidance says there is no one-size-fits-all recommendation and gives 1.5?2 times the content-area width as a rule of thumb for that platform. Check your theme?s settings or documentation first, preserve the aspect ratio unless the target slot calls for a crop, and avoid enlarging a small source until it becomes blurry. If the file remains unnecessarily heavy, export an appropriately compressed copy while comparing it visually with the original; stop if fine detail, text, or image quality degrades. Verify file type and any upload limit in your own WordPress media screen. (Sources 2, 5)

  5. 05

Set the featured image, write the right alt text and preview

In WordPress.com, assign the approved copy as the post?s featured image and save the post as a draft or preview before publishing. Use Nirmion Image Alt Text Decision Tree (tool 30037) to determine what alternative text serves the image?s purpose: a meaningful image needs a concise description of its relevant meaning, a functional image needs to convey the link/action, redundant or decorative artwork may need an empty alt attribute, and complex data must also be explained in article text. Do not stuff keywords into alt text or merely repeat the article title. Follow WordPress.com?s theme guidance if the image is cropped, hidden, or duplicated. Check the public article, archive/blog card and social preview on mobile and desktop; verify attribution appears where the license requires it, the file loads cleanly, and the text alternative matches the final image. Google image guidance describes discoverability practices, not a promise of indexing or traffic. (Sources 1, 4, 5)
