Correct the Date of Birth on an Indian Driving Licence

A date-of-birth discrepancy on a driving licence should be handled by the licensing authority that controls the record. First compare the licence with the primary civil record and confirm whether the error is on the licence or in the source record. MoRTH's Form 2 and the Sarathi portal provide central application context, but the actual correction service, evidence, fees, and in-person checks vary by State. This guide shows how to verify the current route, prepare only accepted proof, submit safely, and inspect the final licence.

MISSION Request correction of a date-of-birth error on an existing Indian driving licence through the issuing licensing authority and verify the corrected record.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Compare the licence with the primary record; identify the issuing State and authority; confirm the live DOB correction service and its requirements; prepare accepted age/date evidence; file and keep an acknowledgement; finish any authority review or appointment; and verify the date on the updated digital or physical licence.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Separate a licence error from a wrong source record

Read the date of birth on the licence and compare it with the primary civil record you rely on. Record the exact discrepancy without changing or rounding dates. If the source record itself is wrong, ask the licensing authority whether it must be corrected before the licence; a licence correction does not amend a birth certificate, passport, or other record. This is a correction to an existing licence, not an application for a new licence or a renewal. The authority may examine the original record and decide whether the evidence supports correction. Do not submit conflicting dates through multiple applications while the first request is unresolved.

  2. 02

Find the issuing State and authority

Use the licence to identify its issuing State, RTO or licensing authority, and record details. Start from the official Sarathi state-selection page and choose the State responsible for the licence. If you moved, do not assume the nearest RTO can edit a record issued elsewhere; check with the original authority and the current State transport department. Parivahan says some document services are available according to State customization, so menus differ. Use only contacts linked from government pages, and keep your licence number and date of birth out of public posts or third-party checklists.

  3. 03

Confirm the current date-of-birth correction service

After selecting the State, inspect the live Sarathi options for an existing driving licence and look for the service that matches a date-of-birth correction. Read the displayed instructions for accepted evidence, upload format, appointment or physical verification, fee, and the licensing office that will decide the case. If there is no matching service, the portal errors, or the displayed choices are unclear, contact the issuing authority through its official channel before applying. A State department's service list may indicate availability, but the current portal and authority instructions control the actual route. Do not use a name-change or address-change form for a DOB error.

  4. 04

Prepare the original date evidence requested by the authority

Check the State's current list and use the primary record it accepts to establish the correct date. MoRTH Form 2 includes date-of-birth details and lists examples of age evidence in its annexure, but that annexure does not prove that every document is accepted for every licence correction. Ask whether the authority needs an original for inspection, a certified copy, a self-attested copy, an affidavit, or a particular issuing-office confirmation. Government Form Checklist (845) can hold a generic reminder to confirm proof and appointment only; never enter a date of birth, licence number, document image, address, or application ID into it.

  5. 05

Submit the request securely and keep its acknowledgement

Use the official Sarathi or State authority page, reached through a government link. Enter the corrected date carefully in the designated existing-licence service, attach only the requested evidence, review every field, and pay only the amount displayed in the official process if a fee applies. Save the dated acknowledgement, application number, office, and next action privately. Do not reveal an OTP, password, full licence copy, or payment PIN to an agent or unsolicited caller. If the request is returned, read the reason and seek clarification from the issuing authority before filing again so duplicate cases do not conflict.

  6. 06

Complete the document check or office visit the portal requires

Monitor the application using the official status option and follow the next action shown by the authority. Depending on State configuration and the record, online submission may be followed by document scrutiny, a request to re-upload scans, an appointment, or an in-person visit. Parivahan's upload guidance specifically notes State customization, so do not assume every applicant can finish online. If originals are requested, carry them to the named authority and obtain an official receipt for any physical papers. A payment receipt or ?submitted? status only confirms a stage; it is not evidence that the date in the licence database has been corrected.

  7. 07

Verify the corrected licence and escalate mismatches

When the authority completes the case, inspect the official digital licence or reissued card and compare the date of birth with the decision and supporting record. Check the licence number, validity dates, vehicle classes, and issuing authority at the same time. If the old date remains, the request is pending, or details do not match across the official display and card, contact the issuing RTO through its published grievance or helpdesk route and quote the application reference privately. Keep the final decision and record secure. Update other identity records separately; this process changes only the driving-licence record.
