Correct or Update the Name on an Indian Driving Licence
A name correction on a driving licence depends on the issuing licensing authority and the evidence behind the change. Start with the exact name on the licence and the official record that supports the requested spelling or new name. MoRTH's Form 2 annexure lists evidence examples for a name change, but it is not a guarantee that every State or RTO asks for the same documents or offers the same online flow. Sarathi availability is customized by State. This guide explains how to verify the correct route, prepare evidence, apply through the official channel, and confirm the corrected licence without relying on unofficial agents.
MISSION Request a correction or legally supported name update to an existing Indian driving licence through the competent state licensing authority, then verify the issued record.

Classify a clerical correction versus a later legal name change; identify the licensing authority and State-specific route; check Sarathi and the authority's current instructions; prepare only the evidence that authority requires; submit and retain the application reference; complete any requested RTO appointment or verification; then inspect the reissued digital or physical licence and follow up through official channels if the record is still wrong.

- 01
Define whether this is a typo correction or a supported name change
Compare the name printed on the licence with the current primary record that should control it, such as the record used by the licensing authority or a legally issued name-change document. Write down the exact current spelling, the requested spelling, and why it differs. A typographical error in the licence is not the same case as a later marriage, gazette, or other legal name change; neither is the same as changing a name on an unrelated identity record. If the source record is itself wrong, ask the licensing authority whether that source must be corrected first. Do not submit a new licence application merely to alter an existing record without confirming the correct service.
Evidence:MoRTH - Form 2 and document annexure - 02
Identify the State and licensing authority that holds the licence record
Use the existing licence to note its issuing State, RTO or licensing authority, and licence class. Open the official Sarathi portal and select that State; if the licence was issued in a different State from where you now live, do not assume a local office can edit the original record. Check the selected State's own transport-department site for the competent office and any instructions for a record correction or name change. Sarathi menus and available services are configured by State, so an option displayed for one State may not exist in another. Use contact details reached from an official government site, not a search advertisement or an unsolicited agent.
- 03
Check the live service route before collecting documents or paying
On the selected State's official Sarathi service, look for services on an existing driving licence and check whether the precise name-related service is offered. Read the current instructions for online application, document upload, appointment, in-person verification, payment, and dispatch; these requirements can vary by State and by the issuing authority. If the service is absent, gives an error, or routes the case to an office, use the transport authority's published contact to confirm the process before submitting anything. Do not infer that a central form alone means a fully online service is available, and do not pay an intermediary to bypass the official route.
- 04
Prepare only the name evidence the authority currently requires
Read the current State/RTO instructions and assemble only the requested documents. MoRTH's Form 2 annexure lists examples for a change of name, including an affidavit sworn before an eligible magistrate or notary, a marriage certificate, and a copy of a newspaper advertisement. Those examples do not establish that every applicant must provide all three, nor that every State accepts the same combination. A simple spelling correction may require different evidence from a legal name change. Government Form Checklist (845) can hold generic reminders such as ?confirm accepted proof? or ?check appointment?; keep names, licence numbers, dates of birth, addresses, document copies, and application references out of the tool.
- 05
Submit through the verified government channel and retain the receipt
Enter personal details only in the official Sarathi or State transport authority service reached from the government's own site. Review the old name and requested name carefully before final submission, upload only the documents the authority requested, and use the payment route shown inside the official service if a fee applies. Save the acknowledgement and application number privately, together with the date, selected RTO, and any stated next action. Never share an OTP, password, complete licence image, or payment PIN with a caller or agent. If the application is rejected or returned, read the reason and ask the authority which correction or evidence is needed rather than starting duplicate applications.
- 06
Complete any document check, appointment, or office visit
Follow the application status and the exact next step shown by the licensing authority. Some services may require the applicant to attend an RTO or show original records even after online submission; other States may provide different handling. If you are asked to upload or re-upload a file, use only the Sarathi upload option when it is enabled for that State, or the office's verified alternative. Carry originals only when the authority instructs you to do so, and ask for an official receipt for any physical submission. A submitted form, payment receipt, or appointment confirmation is not proof that the licence record has already been corrected.
- 07
Verify the reissued licence and resolve any remaining mismatch
When the authority marks the service complete, open the official digital licence record or inspect the reissued card and compare the name character by character with the approved request. Also check the licence number, validity dates, vehicle classes, and issuing authority so a name update has not concealed another record error. If the old name remains, the application is pending, or the licence data cannot be found, contact the same licensing authority using its official grievance or help channel and quote the application reference privately. Keep the corrected record and decision securely. Do not assume a database status alone has changed every other identity document; update those records separately through their own authorities.
