Government & Identity · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Correct your name on an existing Indian PAN
This procedure is for an individual correcting the name on an already allotted Indian PAN. For current applications, Protean lists the PAN Change Request form as PAN CR-01 for individuals; PAN CR-02 is for non-individual applicants. Use the correction service, not a fresh PAN application, and verify the exact proof and submission options for your case on the current Protean or UTIITSL provider page. A minor spelling correction and a substantial legal name change can require different evidence. The form's communication address may update the Income Tax Department record even when address correction is not the purpose, so check it carefully before submitting. Keep PAN, Aadhaar, proof documents and application credentials inside the official provider flow. The optional linked checklist is only for generic document labels and must not contain identity numbers or document scans.
MISSION Help an individual with an already allotted Indian PAN request a name correction through the current PAN Change Request process, keep the same PAN, and verify the updated record without exposing identity documents to unrelated tools.

What happens outside this browser tab?
Confirm you already have a PAN and the name correction is the needed change; check the current PAN CR-01 instructions and prepare proof appropriate to a spelling correction or substantial name change; complete the PAN Change Request and select the name field; verify all details and the communication address before choosing an eligible paperless or document-submission path; then keep the acknowledgment, track the case and confirm the corrected record still uses the same PAN.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm the existing PAN and the precise correction needed
Check your Income Tax Department profile or existing PAN records to confirm a PAN has already been allotted and identify the exact name currently recorded. If the existing PAN is correct and you only need a replacement card, use the provider's reprint path; if the name on Aadhaar is the item that is wrong, follow UIDAI's current correction process instead. Do not submit a new PAN allotment request for an existing PAN. Decide whether this is a spelling/initial-expansion correction or a substantial legal name change, and make sure your requested name matches the supporting evidence you can provide. This guide covers an individual applicant and a name field only; a correction to date of birth, parent name, entity name, duplicate PAN or other special case needs its own current provider guidance.
- 02
Check the current PAN CR-01 evidence requirements
Navigate to the official Income Tax Department or authorized provider page and open the current Change/Correction in PAN Data instructions. Protean's current PAN service identifies PAN CR-01 for individual applicants and PAN CR-02 for non-individuals; confirm the live form applicable to your citizenship and applicant type before starting. For a minor spelling correction or expansion of initials, Protean says suitable proof of identity containing the corrected name is needed. A substantial legal name change requires the name-change evidence and identity proof listed for the applicant's circumstances, such as applicable marriage or gazette evidence. Confirm the current required identity, address, date-of-birth and existing-PAN proofs in the provider's official checklist; do not rely on an old photocopied form or third-party blog. The Government Form Checklist can track generic labels like “identity proof checked” locally, but never enter a PAN/Aadhaar number or upload the document.
- 03
Complete the PAN Change Request and mark the name field
Open the provider's PAN Change Request service from the official domain and select the individual applicant path. The provider describes a token generated before the form is completed; keep it private and use it only on the provider's own service. Enter the existing PAN and mandatory applicant information exactly as shown on the supporting records. Select the checkbox beside the name field being corrected and fill all required fields; do not mark unrelated fields just to request a new printed card. Follow the current form's instructions for name order, expanded initials, Aadhaar name or name to print on the card. Correct any format-validation errors using the evidence rather than guessing. Do not send your PAN, Aadhaar OTP, payment details or scans to anyone contacting you outside the application flow.
- 04
Review the confirmation screen, address and submission mode
Before confirming, compare every field on the provider's review screen against the current identity proof and requested name change. Protean states that the communication address supplied in a change/correction application is used to update the Income Tax Department record, so verify the full address and postal code even when you only intend to correct your name. Check the live fee and choose only a submission option currently available for your case: a paperless e-KYC/e-Sign or DSC route may require no physical document dispatch, while a physical-document route has its own acknowledgment, signature/photo and document-delivery instructions. Do not rely on fee amounts or dispatch deadlines in an old guide; follow the current provider page and the instructions attached to your acknowledgment. Save the payment receipt privately.
- 05
Save the acknowledgment and verify the corrected PAN record
Download the acknowledgment and payment receipt from the successful submission screen and keep the acknowledgment number in your private records. Use only the provider's official status-tracking page to follow the case and respond to requests for additional proof through the channel it identifies. If rejected or held for a proof mismatch, compare the reason with the submitted evidence and ask the authorized provider how to correct the same request; do not submit a second PAN allotment application. When the e-PAN or physical card is issued, check that the corrected name is rendered as expected and that the PAN number remains the same. If the name still differs between PAN and Aadhaar, determine which record is inaccurate and use the proper issuer's correction path. Completion is the updated provider/Income Tax record plus a checked replacement credential, not merely a payment or acknowledgment.
